Quite fascinating, though

(And yeah, I still remember the sense of wonder and hope at the fall of the Berlin Wall... ::))

You may consider changing the thread title though - It's not really about Germany or East Germany, but the countries East of Germany... ;)

What students learn in school often clashes with the memories of their disillusioned parents, who struggled during the transition to democracy and remember with nostalgia the feeling of security they had during the Socialist era.


Totally and absolutly true this one!

You'd all be surprised how many (very loud) arguments I had with my parents for saying things like "they'd killed people who tried to get over the wall".

It's a great example of blindess, my parents still believe "everyone had work, so it was a good life", without seeing that the work some people had was 'made', it was work made up to keep people busy, it had no significance.

My mum also forgot that she was forbidden to study archeology...

And my dad forgot that his beloved italy would have ever been a mystery to him if the wall would still be there.

Students will never fully understand what that was as long as their parents generation is alive...
