Yuk, I can't see myself walking around with a dead fish on my face, a lizard's liver around my anckle and a tobacco bag around my neck ;D
A topic about old remedies that really work would be interesting too.
*Edit* I placed the rest of this post to the remedies that work topic

More, more, more. ;D
Mumps - Tie a black sock around your neck. To keep mumps from going down on a boy, tie a red cloth around his waist.
Nosebleed - Every night pour a bucket of cold water over your head. Keep this up for fourteen days and you will be cured.
2 - Take a piece of string and make nine knots in it
Pain - Find a rock that is partly covered with dirt. Remove the rock from its resting place and spit on the bottom or covered side. Replace the rock in the same hole exactly as you found it.
Perspiration - People who perspire a lot should use a teaspoonful of ammonia in bathwater. Alum, borax or ammonia added to bathwater is also affective.
Poison Ivy (oak, sumac, etc) - Make a paste from fels naptha soap and apply. Do not cover. Let it dry and flake off by itself. One application usually does the job. This from the 1930's.
Poor Eyesight - Pierced ears help cure poor eyesight
2 - The first snow to fall in May is good for sore eyes

Honey is a natural healer. Eat it when you're sick, or hurt, and it helps speed your healing. Also, if you have a sore in your mouth, scoop a spoon of honey, and let it dissolve in your mouth, preferably on the sore. It should help get rid of it. I don't know if this actually helps, but I like to think it does. ;D Just don't use some common, cheap, store-bought honey. Try to get as close to the natural stuff as possible. The kind they would have had in the old days. Killerzzz

If you have a sick bird or a cat, put some honey in their drinking water, but wait after the temperature of the water is a bit colder, or you kill the antibiotics in the honey.

fille, if you know of some natural ones that are proven treatments, how about starting a thread for those. i might be able to come up with a few myself. Good idea; if you or anyone feels like it, please go ahead and set one up... If not, I'll keep the idea in bank and do it myself when I finally manage to keep up on things around. ;D

Well - a good medicine against the flu is tea with rum, or even better a rum toddy (grog), which is a heated mixture of water, rum and sugar.
The best recepy is:
Rum must, sugar may, water doesn't need to - be in it.

Another good remedy against a cold is syrop from the Elderberry. A few spoons of that will heal your cold soon. But watch out for your clothes, the stains wont ever go out!

I just started a thread for natural remedies that work. Fille, Killerzzz do you think it would be possible to move the ones known to work from this thread over to it. It sure would make it easier to find the good natural remedies if we could keep them separate.

I just started a thread for natural remedies that work. Fille, Killerzzz do you think it would be possible to move the ones known to work from this thread over to it. It sure would make it easier to find the good natural remedies if we could keep them separate. Heh, I was gone for a few days, sorry. Looks like you guys got it done without help anyhow. ;D But, no worries, I've got another zinger! So, how to get rid of tapeworms? (thread link ) Well, good question. Call me when you find out. ... Oh, wait, here's how they used to do it. So, you got tapeworms (as far as I know, you usually only get one at a time). Well, that's tough. But wait! Here's a way to get rid of them! ;D (yes I'm getting to it) So, first off, starve yourself for a day or two. Did it? Good! Now, go get a peice of juicy raw meat, preferably pork or beef. Now squeeze it a bit. Is it squishy? Good! ;D Now, stick out your toung, and put it on the end. What, you tought this was going to be easy? Whahahaha! So, just sit (or stand; well, just stay) like that for a while; at least an hour, I think. Then, "presto-change-o!", the worm will come leaping up your stomach and out your mouth for the meat (it's hungry too, you know)! Now GRAB IT! GET IT GET IT GET IT!!! OMIGOSH, ITS GETTING AWAY! PULL HARD! OOOOOO! There, then stomp on it for good mesure. You win! Congratulations, you've just gotten rid of your tapeworm! Enjoy your supper. Killerzzz

Haha!!! Great way of telling it Killerzzz!! You can try the same trick with pickled herring fillet, the smell of the herring will make the worm climb up your throat. Have fun ;D Thanks! I try to make everything I say as dramatic and unnecessary as possible. ;D Now, who want's the old time remedy for madness? Anyone? I know I do, so I'll tell you anyhow. Warning, its a wee bit violent blunt. (who said that?) So, long time ago, people had schzophrenia, like today. (schizo is not multiple personality, btw; its hallucination, voices, jumbled words and thoughts, etc. ) So, everyone was scared of them, and thought they were posessed by demons. So, they had to get the demons out! Don't worry everyone. At that the point of this remedy, I guess burnings were out of style, or something. Yaay! No burning alive! But wait, what happens instead? Well, uhmmm, lets start with this: back then, they thought that the soul and mind were one and the same, so they believed that the soul has in your head. So, ipso-facto, the evil spirits must be in your head too, messing with your soul. So they carefully cut a square hole in your skull to get them out!!! "There we go, chaps. A job well done. Lets go get a beer." "Err, what about Bob? Now that we got the evil out, shouldn't we put the hole back together?" "Naw, he'll be fine." Well... not much of a cure (uhm, since the person ends up dead). Yeah, double-u-tee-eff? People back then needed to understand that killing people doesn't help them out much, does it? I know, I know, fixing the soul and all, bla bla. Try doing it without the gore please. Killerzzz

Well... not much of a cure (uhm, since the person ends up dead). Yeah, double-u-tee-eff? Killerzzz But he WAS cured right? ;D Here in Belgium they treated mad people with throwing buckets and buckets of cold water over them, sometimes the water was boiling hot as well. Or tie them up in some kind of harness on the wall, so they couldn't move for several days
