Those pictures are REALLY REALLY GOOD! I really REALLY like 'The dark tower' and same goes for Smaug, SMAUG!!!! Isn't that the cover for 'Bilbo, a hobbits tale' ? Or am I mistaken ^^ LOVELY PICTURES, Thanks for posting them! (sry for the late reply, mobbie's been busy)

No problem for the business, Mobbie; though you've been missed. Glad you like his paintings. It's very possible that Smaug was used as cover for it... Checking... Yep. The list of books under the pic descriptions is where the image was published; that one was in English and Swede editions of The Hobbit, among others, it seems. Sorry from my part as well for the quietness; I've been busy too, on my side. I promise to come with updates soon, though.

Alrighty, update time... Sorry for the shameful delay. Hopefully I can make up for it. Continuing into LotR stuff. Gwaihir rescues Gandalf from Orthanc (link; 1400 X 1000 pixels ;D ) The scene where Gwaihir resues Gandalf from the dizzy heights of Orthanc is one of my favorites (I'm talking about the scene, not my try at it.) It is eerie and poetic and deserves several paintings. I've recently had people complain that gwaihir is "unauthentic" because he is too big. I must have missed the passage where Tolkien specifies his wingspan... But, if Thorondor had a wingspan of 20 fathoms, which is 120 feet, then Gwaihir seems rather modest compared to his illustrious ancestor.

Another Gandalf... This scene, where Gandalf fights with the balrog must be one of which he made the most paintings. His comments are funny, too. MoriaThe Bridge of Kazad-dum 95.0 x 45.0 cm, 2000 LORD OF THE RINGS BOARDGAME Sophisticated Games © 2002 Yet another scene of Gandalf and the Balrog. The artwork for the board game was done after the film experience, and while contractually obliged to steer clear of the film design, a few changes have crept in. The Balrog's flaming mane is one, and the sword, reminiscent of the two-handed Uruk blades is another. Gandalf has lost his hat too... Otherwise, given the number of elements to be placed over the illustration, the whole composition is quite empty of detail and contrast. *** I disagree to his last sentence... I have this one as a wallpaper somewhere, will try to dig it out. *** A few more: Gandalf and the BalrogGandalf and the Balrog IIGandalf Falls With The BalrogThe Bridge of Khazad-dum

Legolas and Gimli at Helm's DeepLegolas and Gimli at Helm's Deep 79.8 x 59.8 cm, 1999 The 2001 Tolkien Calendar I am particulary fond of a type of arm defence that we've come to call "disc and splint", which crops up throughout the late Middle Ages. Legolas is wearing a version of that, and a two fingered archer's glove over his jack. (And of course one of those high collared mail shirts I love.) I totally forgot his bracer though, and he must have stowed the quiver somewhere below the ramparts. Gimli is totally Russian in inspiration, straight out of Alexander Nievsky, all fine chain plate over heavy lining. The shield is Rohirrim of course.

Back for misc stuff now. Elves and Dragons (big pic) Elves & Dragons After torturing the client for months by continually pushing back the deadline, I finally manged to finish the colour piece, which is on the March 2006 issue of "Cry Havoc" (This is the Rackham Confrontation monthly, and even if you don't paint wee figurines until your eyes water, you can confidently buy this magazine JUST for the artwork. It also regularly features the work of Paul Bonner, who has to be one of the fantastic-est fantasy illustrators around.) Next job: the same dragons, but of the living dead persuasion. I will try to get them done a lot quicker this time.
The sketch is here.

The Space Ship (big picture) 1986 I really loved working on this painting. It was done a part of a small exhibition catalogue edited by a publisher in GenevaAnd another big one; funny, this last. A Most Unusual PaintingA Most Unexpected Image This image was done as a private commission - two specified (and well-known) cartoon characters in a fantasy setting à la Conan the Barbarian. It was my first commission in ages (which ended up being about how long it took me...) After patiently waiting for over two years, the client eventually gave up on me - not that I really blame them.
Obviously, it is unpublishable (and likely unsellable) in any form, so it's now mine by default...
(The copyrighted characters are obviously property of their copyright holders.)

NIce painting Fille, the bird looks magnificant! Glad you liked, Ky. It looks like you only got the first one though. ;D I like that painting too, although the composition is a bit weird, it feels to me. Unusual though, so nice. And I'm done; for now...

Great pictures Fille. Howe's paintings are awesome. He has a way of capturing the mood of his painting that make them really reach out to you. I love The Knight and The Lion and Yvain Rescues the Lion. I also like the Space Ship and the Disney characters in a fantasy setting.
