God, I'm just like you! Gluten and soy. It is really hard. We have a wider selection of nondairy milks here, I think. I would really suggest almond milk but I don't know if that is available in Berlin? There are also lots of nut base cheeses which are quite yummy. Also, if you ever come to the U.S., we have nondairy soy free "butter" that is to die for. I shall find my gluten free cookie recipes! Here is a biscotti recipe: glutenfreegoddess.blogspot.com/2008/09/chocolate-biscotti-cookies-for-grown.html Her blog is pretty awesome. She does a good mix of vegan items and meat-y stuffs. Hopefully that will help!

You forgot to mention some rather infamous SWISS cheeses.... Then there are Danish (Esrom) and Italian (Parmigiano, Gorgonzola) specialities... On the balance, France will have the most variety - be it cow, sheep or goat cheeses, hard or soft or creamy, mellow or strong - they have it all. I tell you - French cheeses, Mediterranean wines and German Breads, spiced with some fruit of the season, is an acceptable diet for a while...

@ Ash - I usually go with the (only two...) brands of lactose free milk we have here - but I can´t use it as a general substitute, simply because it costs like 3 times as much as normal milk... when I recently lived in Australia, I hadn´t this prob, their lactose free milk is awesome AND cheap *sigh* I tried nutbased cheeses and honestly, it isn´t even CLOSE to my beloved gouda, so sorry, I stay an ignorant brat ;D @ Glance - hollandic cheese, french wine and no bread but tomatosalad. That´s the way :-> (though I can also fairly easy live on most asian foods, the entire french cuisine including red wine or italian and greek salads) Actually, the only reason why, even if I weren´t an ectomorph, I´d probably never go fat is that I don´t eat butter, the famous german sausage overload (I eat am, but rarely) and a LOT of french & greek/italian food. Oh and I never liked chocolate as much as most people. I´ve read once that chocolate is more a female thing and salty snacks more a male thing - I´m soooooooooooo male!

Some interesting post here....I am not a vegan, never even thought about it much, but I still do not eat much meat. In fact, I don't eat that much to begin with, never did... I do believe, however, that people who "live" on red meat have more health problems in the long run than those who do not. I have no facts to back that up, but I know a LOT of people and they would probably prove my point...
Side issue...not to stir up a different debate in this thresd...if you want to comment about it, start a different thread... ;D
According to the "Bible"... Humans were vegetarians at the beginning...it was not until the "second" "replenish the earth" that God said to Noah when he came out of the ark that He told them
"every moving thing that liveth shall be meat for you; even as the green herb have I given you all things. (read Gen 9: 1-7)
So I presume that one can live just fine being a vegan...maybe letting people eat meat was another "curse"... ;D

Gal - Sure! Call me whatever you wish. Thank you! I actually don't eat cheese anymore, but if I ever meet you I'll definitely take you up on that offer. My mom adores brie and would love that.
ss - If I remember correctly, weren't Adam and Eve technically vegan in the garden of Eden? I'm fine with you talking about it, I find it very interesting. I've heard lots of things about vegetarianism and the Bible. Are you a theologian? I'm not religious myself but I love learning about various ones.
kitty - I've only had really amazing nut based cheese (Other than the tofu cashew ricotta) at raw food restaurants, oddly. It doesn't taste like real cheese but really amazing on its own. My mom only approves of those cheeses and the tofu based ones, she's so funny. She always says she could be vegetarian but not vegan, she'd miss her cheese too much. I hear that the most. If I ever head out towards you, I'll bring you some of the nondairy milks in aseptic packaging, promise.
I got to go to Shojin today! So amazing.

I don't NEED to respond to the cheese, Fuzi! 'Brit cheese is best' says everything that needs saying! ;D
And I was not following on from the chat. I just decided Fuzi works as the best shortening. The best that isn't an alt term for a swear word, at least... ;D

Elliboo, you confuse me quite a lot. But you're super adorable!
I hate carbonation and caffeine!
Kitty - About the chocolate, I never liked it until I went vegan. I thought it all tasted like Hershey's which is super gross. I don't eat it much anymore, but I do adore my dark chocolate. Evil fats.

You all make me very hungry. My vegan friend made a rhubarb-tofu-cake the other day, though I hate to admit it, but it was awesome (but I wasn´t able to eat more than 2 pieces cause the tofu made my tummy ache ) But i just can´t resist rhubarb...ever... when I was a kid, I even was allergic to it because I ate it every single day for 5 months straight ... EDIT: I forgot, Ash, I´ll be in the US in not too long... not Cali but hey, at least the same continent to start of ;D

Kitty - Rhubarb is so good! I'd never had it until a year ago and I absolutely adore the thing. If you have time, could you maybe get the recipe for me? I'd love you forever.
Where will you be in the US? I wonder if you'd like Almond Breeze. What are your feelings on coconut?
Also, you have a lovely singing voice. Totally random but I just wanted to tell you.

I wrote my friend a mail, she´ll send me the recipe. I´ll be visiting some friends, one in Nebraska and one in Minneapolis (and if I find the money one in Florida). I like coconut, thozgh I don´t like it as pure flesh but I rly love anything coconut flavored and I´m a heavy user of coconutmilk. Oh no worries IF I like some random comment, than on my singing

^Sorry I wasn´t here for ages, friggin inet broke... I asked the friend about the rhubarb cake but I´ve to translate the recipe first, than I´ll post it in the recipe thread.
And Coconut-lemon sounds aaaaawesome! I´d love the recipe! I´ll pass it on to my BF since I suck at baking ;D
Shortly btt, I currently have exactly 2,25€ for food a week. (that´s US$3 or £1,90) so I live vegetarian atm. What sucks alot because I don´t get enough fat... but oh well. I can´t pay for legumes or any slightly more fat fruits/veg (avocado, banana etc), so I basically live of rice and soupveggis.
No fun. At all.
I´m dreaming of salami and chicken! AH!
