I just won't have time by next Friday to click editing mode of every one of my posts (and those of the replies I've gotten) and copy them all.
It's much easier for me to just shrink them so that my 'intellectual property is protected' and then make the move at a later date.
Though I've been experimenting with the firefox add-on called scrapbook. Might be able to back up stuff that way...

OK I'm sorry everything's happening so fast, but the amount of warning we've had for this is nowhere near enough

Oh, yeah, I understand.
I'll let you know which ones I need moved as soon as I fix them up.
Ugh, scrapbook is way to complicated for me. Great for doing a page or two, but takes forever.

We're talking mainly about stories, poetry & artwork, Flix, though photos would be covered, too. According to my reading of it, they are pretty much granting themselves the right to take anything we post here and use it as they see fit. Or am I wrong? I know little enough about Brit law and certainly less about US law, so your viewpoint is certainly vastly more informed than my own. Would they, for example, be able to publish a book of 'ProBoards Fiction' incorporating stories posted on their forums? Gah, a lot happened in a short amount of time. You're right, basically, even though the chances are slim that any of that would happen, it legally could. All things considered I suppose I stand by the move. I certainly understand the decision. I also use ad-blockers and there is no way I'm compromising on that.

For which I do not blame you at all, Flix. There's absolutely no reason why you should have to, to my mind.
I've looked at a number of other hosts by now, and ProBoards is the only one imposing that condition. I can't say I love every ToS I've read over the last few days, but most are the kind of thing the old proBoards ToS was before they started all this.

For which I do not blame you at all, Flix. There's absolutely no reason why you should have to, to my mind. I see their point, though. Those adds is what's keeping ProBoards floating, and if everyone would use ad-blockers then they'd get no money (they get money per view and extra money per click) and then they wouldn't be able to keep the site free. I've been on another site that explicitly forbids ad-blockers for that reason. How to realistically implement such a policy is another issue but I do see why they don't like ad-blockers. Übereil

The majorty of people who visit any site are not the posters, Ube. They are the people who hover because the forum looks interesting, read the stuff but don't feel like they want to join for whatever reason. If you look at our daily visitors, the vast majority every day are guests. That's where the majority of views and clicks for any advertising is coming from.
The people who make the forums more interesting - those who bring all those guests here - are the posters.
Drive down the posters and you also drive down the guests. That's not good as it hurts forum and ad revenue alike.

Not to burst your bubble, but... A large part of the "guests" on message boards are indexing bots. For my part, since the notice is so short, I'll simply delete the parts of my posts that I feel are sensitive and probably leave the rest up; the packrat (land lazy) in me doesn't really feel like going through massive deletion. How many posts have I made already?

I know many are bots, but many aren't, too

Personally, I'm quite a bit frightened about 2 Proboards-based boards I know of - which contain a LOT of copyrightes, user-made material, but the people there just to seem to not care about it.
It is a very art-oriented forum, which makes me feel very uneasy ...

Only thing you can do is warn them, Alrik. After that, it's their decision, I'm afraid. You shouldn't feel bad as long as you do your best to make them aware of possible problems.

Will we still be able to log into our accounts here and check our PMs when the site is in maintenance mode?
Or should we back up any of those we need as well?

Hmmm. Good question. I have absolutely NO idea, Kaz. I THINK you should be able to log on, just not post new stuff, but I'm not 100% sure...

I don't think anyone but the admins would be able to access the site while in maintenance mode, IIRC. Probably best to grab as much as you can and move it to the new place beforehand, just to be on the safe side.
