thanks to the biggest Smiths & Morrissey fan, i've quite a number cd's - Smiths' Louder than Bombs, The Singles & Morrissey's You Are The Quarry, Your Arsenal & The Best Of.

the first that i popped into the player was The Singles & i had to skip the first song to This Charming Man. hehehe!!! let's say i'm listening to this incredible song as a tribute to a true Smiths fan - Shark Smith. ;D (i can imagine him saying to me - Janggut, it was really nothing)

true to his words, i love almost all the songs in The Singles. the ones i don't love, it doesn't mean i hate them but they're not as great as the rest.

it was good that the compilation ends with the right song - my all-time Smiths fav - There Is A Light That Never Goes Out.

How Soon Is Now sounds more Johnny Marr than Morrissey with the songs dragging out like that with layers of guitar sounds & Morrissey's voice as some sort of filler. i don't know but it feels a bit un-Smiths.

i have yet to hear the songs from Morrissey but i have at least listened to The More U Ignore Me, The Closer I Get. where does Morrissey begin & where does Smiths end? great song!

Girlfriend in a Coma sounds like a happy song but the lyrics are just tragic. the way the song is made, it's like the person tries to make light of it yet the inevitable can't be ignored & that makes this song sounds happy & feels sad. one of the best from the Smiths.

You skipped Hand in Glove?!? Janggut, that was their first single and gave them quite an underground cult following. It's a great song, if you didn't go back and listen to it, please do so.

This Charming Man is great, isn't it? I love that song! Glad you liked Girlfriend in a Coma, one of my faves

Ringleader Of The Tormentors: New album title, producer, engineer, and release information; Morrissey’s description of the new album.

3rd October 2005

Production on the new Morrissey album has been undertaken by Tony Visconti, who is in Rome with Morrissey and the band. The album should be completed by November 1st, and is entitled Ringleader Of The Tormentors.

Tony Visconti is most famous for production on all of the early albums by T.Rex and David Bowie.

Jeff Saltzman, who was originally named as producer, could not undertake the project.

The album is engineered by Marco Origel, who is from the San Francisco area.

Ringleader Of The Tormentors will be released on Attack early in 2006. Morrissey is delighted with the album which he describes as “the most beautiful—perhaps the most gentle, so far.”

that is great news indeed!

i do listen to Hand In Glove & it has that early 80's new wave feel to it. very similar to the Cure's early works (example Killing An A**b) though it sounds lighter when compared to the Cure (Robert Smith is creepy but talented).

i tend to like the mellow songs & it's just how i am now. no more of those dark moody songs. which is why songs like Ask, William It Was Really Nothing, Panic are just right to my ears.

this weekend i'll listen to Morrissey & give my comments on the following week. safe bet will be that i'll love the songs. ;D

Janggut, here's some pretty cool commentary about This Charming Man from www.oz.net/~moz/lyrics/lyricsin.htm

Probably The Smiths' second most famous song (after How Soon Is Now ?), this whimsical tune is enchanting in its flowery lyrics and complex guitar part. This song really did quite a lot to fuel the critic's fire when it came to Morrissey being effete and inconsequential.
Stuart James says of this song :

"The punctured bicycle is our protagonist's bisexuality. It is punctured because his attraction to men has been repressed up to now. The desolate hillside represents the general unhappiness of his life at this moment. He is confused and asks 'Will nature make a man of me yet?' because he wishes to fit into our society's popular perception of what it is to be a 'man' (macho, heterosexual etc) but knows deep down that he cannot.
The charming man in the charming car is the sexual breakthrough our protagonist has been hoping for. The driver is the ultimate gay icon (Ed: shades of James Dean in his Mini Cooper ?) and comforts our protagonist by telling him not to 'pamper life's complexities' and to join him in the exiting bisexual lifestyle he should be leading. Immediately on entering the world of liberated sexuality, our protagonist feels free to dicuss his worries about appearance ('I would go out tonight...') and flurts openly with the driver of the car. The driver suggests his passenger forgets about the previously punctured side of his sexuality ('return the ring') and our protagonist is confident in the wisdom of this ultimate gay man ('he knows so much about these things').
The overall impression is that of hope for the triumph of human sexuality over the repression of our culture."

the rest of us smiths just enjoy the songs the way they are.

i listened to Morrissey's Best Of last night & my fav so far is still The More U Ignore Me The Closer I Get. many of the songs in there are very very nice as well but i was listening to the compilation in the dark with my headphone on so i didn't take a look at the songlist to find out which was which. one of the songs had that Stone Roses feel to it, & i like that.

Janggut, The Best of has A LOT of great songs. I find that with The Smiths and Morrissey you usually have to listen to the songs a few times before they grow on you.
