It might be fast paced in that it goes up and down, but there is still very little scoring, so we don't get into that like we do basketball. Basketball is also up and down, but teams are scoring a lot in basketball.

A couple of things: Football is not slow as you put it..the game is played at a fast pace. Your right. It is soccer that is slow. Also the game is quite physical... Ummmm, what? Please see my response about players "flopping". (And head butts, do not count as physical) It is not boring, you can get multiple shots at goal and some of the passing can be great. Multiple shots on goal. That is exciting? What about the other 2 hours ? Yes, kicking a ball to another guy and then him kicking to yet another and then scoring zero points is fun. I dont think Beckham will set the country alight but he will drag a few more viewers in A few, for awhile Boring, boring, boring sport.

Come on pt... that headbutt was VERY physical... and it certainly wasn't boring. Dirty cheap shot? Hell yes! Fun to watch? Hell yes!

I am not taking about flopping....people do not aways as you put it flop...there are some crunching tackles if you watch it.
A football game is 1 hour 30 mins...not 2 hours.
The as you put it low scoring football scores means you have to be very smart and creative to open up another persons defence.
I do not usually favour sports where you can score every 2 seconds becuase for me the game becomes predictable. The fact you have to work and usually fight to get that all important goal or two means the team has usually earnt it.
This is why I favour Baseball over the other US sports.
In football the game can change in a second so it is more unexpected and unpredictable.

1) Compare it to american football. American football is five seconds of everyone hitting everyone... then they have to discuss what to do next five seconds for three minutes. In football at least SOMETHING is going on all the time... 2) Watch the English Premier League. There's (exept for a player or two. Usually Chelseaplayers, strange enought...) allmost never fake injuries. 3) As tragic sais, when you score one goal instead of 80 you treasure that goal so much more. And goals is FAR from the only action in a (real) footballgame . 4) Yeah, well... SEE WHERE YOU'D BEEN WITHOUT FEET! You somewhere mentioned that you never know how much added time there is. That's a lie. There is a fourth assistant who keeps track on this and in the end of first/second half he displays a sign saying how much added time there is. It's usually not more than 3 minutes. Apart from this, I too think the main reason you americans don't like soccer is because you're not best in the world on it . Don't say it is because of the lack of money, because the best payed players earn ridicullous sums (about £100 000/week for the best payed. That's allmost $200 000/week . And that's more than $10 000 000/year )... About hockey being a terrible TV-sport... It beats Amrerican football by miles. I used to like hockey a while back (and I don't mind it now), it just seems too random for my likeing (the tempo is too high which means the passinggame isn't of any higher quality, and all you need to score is to get the puck into the offensive zone and get a lucky shot off). If hockey was a better tv sport (in AMERICA anyway) then it would be on tv here, it's not. No one here wants to watch it. Guys, there is no reason for this to degenerate into an American football vs. European football argument. No one here is going to change anyone's mind on the two sports!

I just didn't want this to start to get ugly, I know how passionate football fans (regardless of variety) are!

True that *** Back to Beckham: apparently he took the director who lied about him to task in front of the entire Real Madrid team and forced him to publically admit he was wrong and apologise for it. Gotta love that ;D

Can't believe I never mentioned this but...
The LA Galaxy is having open tryouts for the team. $130 gets you a shot. So if you have some skill, (not that you need much here,) and $130, come be a professional soccer player. Even if you aren't that good, maybe they'll let Beckham school you and you can say it happened?
Open tryouts for a professional sports team is such a stupid gimmick. I know it's possible to TRYOUT, but you couldn't just go up to any old teams training camp and say, "I wanna try coach!"
Oh well.

What's wrong with that? I mean, if you fail you've lost $130. It's not like you pay $130 and then you're in the team, you STILL need some talent/skill...

How many people who are no where near good enough to play you suppose will try out? I mean, seriously... you can't tell me a lot of them don't already know they can't do it.

Latest rumor is that Zinedine Zidane is making a comeback and joining Beckham in L.A Galaxy.
Could be an interesting development, for sure. Another well known football player, and even though not in his prime, still a good name draw.

I hadn't heard that, but if it's true I'm sure I will in the next 24-36 hours. At least if he plays we might see someone get hurt.

zidane to join galaxy as well?? I thought they were only allowed one "franchise" player per team. Otherwise, how could they possibly afford another player like that. And beckham got 250 million so what about Zidane? 300 million??

Less. Beckham is not as good a footballer, sure, but he's a bigger name worldwide than Zidane, and it's the worldwide appeal LA Galaxy are hoping for, I think.
Just signing players like these brings a lot of appeal to the US game from all around the world. That can't be bad for football in the US.
I think they are allowed more than one player who busts the records, but I'm not sure. I keep thinking three for some reason, but I really don't recall.

I'm actually pretty sure E is right that they are allowed one more player. I'm pretty sure I heard it was two or three, I'm not positive.

Well, seems the Zidane rumor was just that - a rumor. Could've been interesting though but then Bild isn't always known for accurate predictions

Seems like Beckham is being hailed the hero for nearly beating Brazil.....
Oh no!!
Personally I might have Beckham as a holding midfielder but not as a right winger.
