I'd like to announce that during a discussion today me and another friend of mine decided to officially changed the spelling of 'tongue.' From now on it will be spelt 'tounge.'
Thanks for your attention.

Did you already contacted The American Heritage Dictionary? After all, they need to take up that new spelling for the next year edition ;D

I remember that the Larian forums have the "official" spelling of "tomatoes" now. (Even worse: Probably invented by me ... )

what's really strange is how sciencey things such as crystallisation are now spelt with a Z due to American spelling (apperently there are few terms we have to spell the American way for our GCSE ) and also sulphur to sulfur. to me the second one just doesn't look right...

The change form 'ph' to 'f' is made in a lot of languages, including Dutch. It's just natural that languages change when groups of people are divided from eachother. But I can still understand that 'sulfur' looks weird in comparison to 'sulphur', if you're used to the second ofcourse

Same with photo or foto, phobia or fobia etc. But the French score the highest with using many words to say something that could be said in a few words ;D

Seems crazy to me to adopt American spellings. The meaning of words is bound to change over time, but that's natural. This - not so much.

Why would it be crazy when the US is the leading economical power? At college I have to study European symbols, notations, etc.. as well as American for different sciences and courses.

The only downside to me is academic - changes in spelling might obscure the etymology of a word, I guess. Of course, there's really no reason to foist American changes on the rest of the English speaking world, unless of course, our spellings are easier to remember and make more 'sense' intuitively. ;D I kind of like the American changes. Lots of them are thanks to Noah Webster and his famous dictionaries - he wanted to spell words how they sounded (interestingly enough, he wanted to spell tongue as 'tung' ).

There is an irony in your post. You find changes in spelling odd, but you yourself do not take the trouble to spell correctly. I wonder what you would have to say about grammar.
