Except for the last part, yes. That's all true. The people that mainly settled in Britain right up to the 20th century were also those who were trying to get AWAY from Europe.
If you look at our songs and our culture, we always define ourselves as being an 'island race' - and that mentality permeates.
Churchill said that Europe getting together was a good thing - but that Britain should not be a part of it. I'm not entirely convnced about the first part, but I become more and more convinced of the second.
