Did you guys know, that British Columbia has one of the hihgest levels of property crime in North America?
I'll give you an example.
My inexpensive, highly not-saught after, uncommon car. A car which no carthief in their right mind would ever dream of stealing...
Was stolen today, while I was at work. Meaning I have no mode of transportation. Meaning I have no way to get to work. Meaning, in all likelyhood, I will be unemployed soon, without a car.
Meaning, I'm so completely and totally [Censored]ed, that its not even funny.

It'd take my 90 minutes to get to work by bus. My town has among the worst transit systems in the province, since the municipality REFUSED to join the broader province initive for good public transit.

Btw, what is it with North Americans and public transportation. When I was in Denver it seemed only the less fortunate took the bus. Over here public transportation is good and commonly used. I use it every day and really don't have any need for a car...

In my province, its mixed.
Only the less fortunate take the bus, in THIS town and the one next to it.
In Vancouver, Richmond, Delta, and Surrey, the bus is a viable mode of transportation that MANY people use, whether they be middle class or lower class. The reason being, that said bus is a viable mode of transportation.
In Vancouver and Richmond, often the bus is just as fast as going by car to some places.
However, I don't live there. You see, some towns in the region, like Abbotsford, and Mission, and Cloverdale. They decided "Bastards at translink! Who needs um?!" and thus, they're buses are... pieces of [Censored]that can't get even across town in 90 minutes.

I've been using a bus that needed an hour to get to my work during an internship. So I know how this is.
To me, this appears as if you've got to use the bus or/and get a new job or car nearer to your town.
I had almost said "use the bicycle instead", but now it appears to me as if your work is too much away from your home for that.
Is there no way to find out others who come from your area and work in the same company ? To ask them if they can take you with their car given you pay them the gas ? People do that sometimes here. We call that (roughly translated into English) an "driving community" or "driving partnership" or so.
You could work out a timing so that you go by bus to a point where your "driving partner" picks you up and you both drive to the company, for example.

TD, sorry to hear of your misfourtune... Does your auto insurance provide for a rental as they would if your car was wrecked.. ?? I did not know that BC had that high a crime rate, but definetly the North American continent has a public transportation problem...the only good public transportation I ever saw was Philadelphia...both bus and subway... My daughter in LA had her car stolen THREE (3) times !!! So she traded it off for a different one... |

It does not provide a rental under the circumstances of theft...
And to make things worse, I tried telling my work I couldn't make it, and explained to them it would take me longer to get to work and home, then my actual shift, and they basically told me "Too bad".

You should give us their telephone number so we can put the pressure on them. (As long as the dialling costs are not too high.)
It's risky, but at least it will tell them that you are not an obolete number which can be fired at any time.

Um... That's a really bad idea, Alrik, and quite possibly illegal... I don't think that TD's employer would look kindly upon his friends all calling them to point out they are bastards, and it's not like we could threaten them with loss of custom, anyway.
Organised harassment on something like this is never a good idea.

I was not saying "they are bastards", I was meaning that someone could be worried that he could be fired because of his car being stolen. It could be wrapped into a question.
I was never intending to say that the company's employees should be insulted. In that case, their reaction could even be worse.
My intention was to express the worries of people related to him.
On the other hand, a company that's saying "too bad" is insulting HIM !
They are insulting him by seeing in him just an obsolete working force that can be fired at any time, and not regaring him as a HUMAN BEING !
That's to what it basically comes down.
They just exploit the necessity of people to work there, because there is no other possibility to actually find work. Companies which act like that are inhuman.
