I was wondering what animal is your favorite? And why do you pick that one out of all the others? Do you like it for the looks, the viciousness or that instinct of survival? Explain why you like that particular animal, you can post a picture too if you want to show off ;D
My favorite animal is the horse, I like the athelic way a horse is build, if you ever looked into a horses eyes, you never forget that look. I saw once a horse that was taken to the slaughterhouse, and she looked me in the eyes, as if I could help her, as if she knew where she was going. I never forget that feeling of being powerless to do something. Horses are really smart animal, and they feel it very well if you are sad and need comfort. horses are also known for their stamina, you can let a horse run, it will keep running untill it drops dead. My favorite among the horses are the Mustang horses, mostly used for the Pony Express. Here is a picture of one of the most famous mustangs Hidalgo.
In Belgium we have a bread of horses that is called the Flemmish farmhorse, a strong heavy build horse, with a gentle character, known for his ability to work hard. We also have a label with that horse on our famous Palm beer.
I never eat horsemeat in my life, horses are too noble animals to eat in my opinion. And besides, horses are the closest to Unicorns, wich are my favo fantasy animals.

Hmmm, I'd say my favorite animal is the bird. I've always loved the idea of flying, and I swim alot because thats as close as I'll get to flying (planes don't count ;D ). I'd say my favorite bird is the sparrow. Its a funny story really. When I was a kid, I wanted to created a name for myself for when I was playing make-believe. I came up with "Sparro". Then, I saw a sparrow and I thought it was cool, being a quick cleaver little bugger, and I asked my parents what it was called. When they told me it was called a "sparrow", I was psyched! ;D I said "Cool!" and my make-believe self became "Sparrow" from that point on. "Live your dreams and fly like an eagle." Killerzzz

Killerzzz Thanks to you I finally know that a sparrow is not what I thought. Sparrow looks a lot like our Dutch word for a starling but now I know what a sparrow is, I must say, you would fit very well being one
@ Shan What attracks you to lions? Only that they are called king of the jungle? Cause in my eyes, the king of the jungle is the elephant. I'm wondering what you like the most about lions.
I know our beloved Dane (cough cough) ;D has a weak spot for large felines, so I'm hoping he will post some pics of the great animal he loves so much.

Why is the lion my favorite, not sure what first attracted me to them. I do know it was not because they are called King of the Jungle though. I love their color for one thing and the mane the male lion has. Part of it could be the movie about Elsa that I saw when I was little. It was a favorite of my parents and I always thought it would be cool to have a lion for a pet. I can remember crying when they went back and found Elsa and her family. I also liked the music from that movie too. I also thought the tale of the mouse and the lion was cool, and that could have played a part in why I like them so much too. I had a large stuffed lion when I was little and in fact it is still up in the attic at my parents house. I am also a big fan of black panthers but lions beat them.

Good topic idea, Ky. We could do other favorite threads like that too, eventually. Your picks are nice and some I share too... I love horses a lot for their beauty and their special temper, as well as for the relationships we developped with them; on the side of the temper, they might be the HSP (highly sensitive persons?) of the animal kingdom. ;D Birds I love too, especially the funny, intelligent/creative ones and the birds of prey. They have very surprising and cool ways or capacities at times, too, for imitation, solving puzzles, play, memory, agility... In addition to look neat. If I had to choose to be an animal other than human, a bird would probably be my pick. I love big cats and wild cats a lot too; lions would probably not be my first choice in favorites, but they (can ) look great and have a very special kind of social and dominance ways. Not many creatures want to mess with big kitties like this and often just a slanted frown from these is enough to make a foolhardy change its mind. My fav animal is of course this one though: ;D I prefer them for several reasons; the main is a question of appeal, but further than that I find that they're like us in many ways and that we can learn and be inspired a lot by observing and knowing them better. Or at least I am. I've been lucky enough to come across and hear the night howl of wild ones, and it was moments that made a big impression on me.

It might be easier for me to list the ones I don't like...
Anyway, I love dogs, anything in the water, insects, spiders, scorpions, snakes... you know what... there really isn't any animal I don't like... I can't pick one favorite though...

Fille I knew you had to post the wolf. You have the same character as the wolf, a survivor, gentle character but don't piss them off ;D Wolves are mystical, no wonder they are used in soo many fantasy stories. And I'm not talking about the fairytales where the wolf eats Redcap or the three little piggies ;D
@ Shan Lions have gotten my interest after I saw the Lion King, it's silly I know, but in that movie you see the good side of the lion as a wise and noble animal. But to be honest, I prefer the female lions, they do all the work, hats off! ;D
@ Venom What do you like in spiders and other insects? All I can see is a lot of nasty little creatures, I'm arachnopic, so a world without fat ugly spiders and other from the arachnids family would be my utopia ;D

Generally I prefer canines over felines, though the cheetah has a bit of both and such is a fascinating animal. But there is one family you surprisingly haven't mentioned yet: Wether black... or brown... ...or white... ...whether eating... ...or edible ... ...BEARS are loveable!

I live near the Elizabeth River in Norfolk Va now, in a very secluded neighborhood...As I am looking out the window, there are two hugh Hawks flying around my front yard and down the street..They showed up about 3 days ago and love my yard for some reason..If I walk across the street the tidal water comes up to the street and lots of cranes and such hang out there, so they are probably looking for little birdies to eat (or some of the numerous rabbits that live here) ... ;D But they sure are beautiful birds...

Predator birds are indeed very pretty birds, as all birds are. A little while ago we had a flock of Gyps fulvus Griffon Vulture here in Belgium. They are originally from the Spanish Pyrenees, so it's still a guess why they came to Belgium. We don't have enough food for them. They eat from carcasses of dead animals, and here dead animals are cleaned up from the streets and the meadows. Now they have moved towards Eastern German, so I've read. They are in a bad condition and wont survive probably. I hope they find their way back home.

@ Glance We haven't forget about the bears though you only mentioned the big ones, there are also the koala bear
They look cute though they can be very fisty at times. The Koala (Phascolarctos cinereus) is a thickset arboreal marsupial herbivore native to Australia, and the only extant representative of the family Phascolarctidae.
The Koala is found all along the eastern coast of Australia from near Adelaide to the southern part of Cape York Peninsula, and as far into the hinterland as there is enough rainfall to support suitable forests. The Koalas of South Australia were largely exterminated during the early part of the 20th century, but the state has since been repopulated with Victorian stock. The Koala is not found in Tasmania or Western Australia. (Wiki)
We used to have some koala's in our zoo for a while, but I think they are back to Australia, they wont last our winter here. The Koala lives almost entirely on eucalyptus leaves. This is likely to be an evolutionary adaptation that takes advantage of an otherwise unfilled ecological niche, since eucalypt leaves are low in protein, high in indigestible substances, and contain phenolic and terpene compounds that are toxic to most species. Like wombats and sloths, the Koala has a very low metabolic rate for a mammal and rests motionless for about 19 hours a day, sleeping most of that time. Koalas that are disturbed are known to be violent, their teeth and claws capable of providing considerable injury to humans; special handling requirements are as such applicable.
