I know we have some Buffy fans hanging around here, so thought I might get some discussion going. Anyway, my used bookstore was letting go a bunch of Buffy DVD sets for cheap. So I went and got a copy of Season 5 and brought it home. I've only seen a little bit of it so far, but I'm liking it right now. Buffy vs. Dracula was pretty good. I imagine it could only have looked like heaven compared to Season 4, which I couldn't finish due to it being so disappointing. More than anything, though, I'm into this for Dawn. I liked her in the later two seasons, but never saw her in Season 5. She seems to be a "love or hate" sort of character, but I find her interesting. I want to see how she was established early on. Let you guys know when I see the rest. I may have some other thoughts then.

Buffy vrs Dracula is one of the best episodes of the season, along with the finale, which I won't spoil Overall, I thought it was pretty solid, and I do love Dawn, who is really cool Not the best season by any means, but not the worst either.

Nothing was bound to top Seasons 2-3, let's face it. But then, I have Season 2 on DVD, and most of Season 3 on VHS already. Long as Season 5 is reasonably entertaining, as it is so far, I don't think it was wasted money. I just kept missing Season 5 whenever it showed up on TV. In good part because I couldn't bring myself to endure the horror of Season 4 in order to reach it. Now I don't have to. Just loved Xander making cracks at Dracula early on, and he was funny even as Drac's minion. Joss is the master of good dialogue. And Dawn is great. I've always loved her whole relationship with Buffy. Wouldn't have used her as an influence for Amy in the RPG if I didn't.

I liked season 5 one of the best. If not for the finale, Buffy vs. Dracula, and others.
Plus I think Dawn is cute.

Season Five, for me, only has one real aggravation in an otherwise excellent series - the seeming inability of every single writer to recognise the difference between a god and a goddess, and the obvious fact that the two words are NOT interchangeable.
If Clare Kramer was any less obviously female, or if there was some ambivalence, I'd have yelled at the screen a lot less ;D
But really - that level of stupidity annoys me...

Haven't gotten to Glory yet, but I will before long, I'm sure. Right now... saw a great Dawn establishing episode, an okayish Xander story, and a decent Spike/Harmony episode. It's watchable stuff, with the occasional great moment thus far. My favorite moments, aside from Buffy vs. Drac, so far have been Dawn moments. Her tension with Buffy is great. I love that Buffy wishes she could be safe and protected, while Dawn wishes she could have instant respect like Buffy. Even when Dawn gets in trouble, it's still fun to watch. Scary how many Amy moments I see with Dawn when I watch this. But then, that's as I designed her.

Dawn is a great creation She comes across as a real person. I always thought she was one of the best characters in the Buffyverse, and I loved her since her first appearance Dawn has a lot more to her than just 'The Kid Sis'

I'm only familiar with Dawn from later seasons, but she always came across well to me. I didn't get to really know her the way I am now, though. She was a very well developed character. All the more reason why I'm surprised I came that close. Guess it goes to show how strong a character Dawn really is.

Okay, bringing this topic back because I've finally finished the whole of my Season 5 set. All in all, a pretty good season. Not up to the level of Seasons 2-3 (as if anything could be), but still entertaining overall. Some of the individual episodes are really good. "Buffy vs. Dracula", "Real Me", "The Body", and "Fool For Love" are standout favorites of mine for different reasons. "The Gift" is a very good finale, and probably would have ended the show really well had Joss not decided to continue for two more seasons. Glory was a pretty decent villain. Certainly better than most Buffy villains past Season 3. She was powerful and fairly complex. In a way, she was like what Illyana might have been as a villain. Good investment, overall. I love the way the whole cast develops here. Buffy, Dawn, and Spike especially came across well in it. I'll miss this show.

Glory was cool, even if she was a complete airhead. The scene where Giles kills Ben is an absolute favourite, and gave me chills, even if the idiot scriptwriter had him call Buffy a 'hero' - a misuse of the language that Giles of all people should never be guilty of. 'The Body' is one of the all-time great Buffy episodes, being SO good it's almost unwatchable. Anyone who's seen it will know what I mean Overall, a very solid season - and a far better ending than that which finally concluded the whole thing, I agree. Not that that would be hard, sadly...
