Very cool picture even if it does have alot of blue in it. I like the ground cover in this one and the large rock like image which I assume is the spaceport and the buildings in the background. Hmmmmm is that a spaceship taking off? Spaceport

Yeah, poor me. ;D I am beginning to think you are right though that he does like blue. Anyone who would paint a gryphon's (i'll trust steve on this) mane blue has got to love bule. ;D Yeah Sarah's avatar. And I agree she has very good taste. I like Wind Dancer alot. (not so much blue ;D The wings are awesome.

Cornered is a good piece. Gold makes a nice change of pace from all that blue. ;D Red Worm And Knight doesn't impress me so much as the others. I'm not sure I can quite put my finger on why. The dragon looks cool, though.

Glad you agree Steve. ;D The knight in "Red Worm and Knight" looks very stiff, lifeless. Whelan does have a way with dragons though. Some of them have been very good. Uh, knight in picture, Mr. Knight, no way. He doesn't remind me of Mr. Knight at all.

I agree with you on the Knight. He seemed really stiff and lifeless to me too. We seem to be in sync today. And yeah, I don't see Mr. Knight in him either. He ain't THAT stiff. ;D

Yep, I can see images in the rocks in Portal as well; but I don't think they were intended. ;D That painting is good, too. The "hairdress" ones are very well done, at least for the characters; the backgrounds are not extra. (Wow, I'm so criticizing tonight... ) I like Delirium though; and don't mind the blue mane on this picture, even if it doesn't look very natural. I think it would have looked worse if he had done the whole creature white. Wind Dancer is cool. Did we turn that board into avatar decryption or what? Winlok, Steve, Sarah, Mobbie, Tsel, me... who's next? ;D Spaceport is nice as well. It indeed looks like a shuttle is taking flight by there; its shape echoes to that of the mountain tops. Cornered too, but I don't like the dragons' arms... they look too twisted, to short, something like that; like young kid arms on an adult body. Red Worm and Knight is so-so, to me; the soldier looks indeed very stiff, and hand of the dragon on the left gives me the same impression than the dragon arms in the previous pic, but his head is cool, it reminds a bit of the one of the dragon in Draco, if we except the "beak".

Just a small update, for the one or two people who might care. ;D It turns out I was right about Dragon Hatchlings. It was indeed the cover to Anne McCaffrey's novel Dragonsdawn, which is one of the Pern books. I did a check in the bookstore and found it. I knew I'd seen it before.

Whelan! Heh, he was my ex-girlfriend's favorite artist. I have a book marker with Dragon Holds a Maiden on it that she sent me once. Still have it as a matter of fact.
Whelan and the late Parkinson heavily influenced my style of fantasy art back in high school.

Great, thanks for posting that metalliman. I didn't know that Whelan illustrated these; in fact, it's the first time I see them, mines being pocket editions with other covers. I love the first one in particular, with Roland sitting on the beach at the bottom; great painting, and it fits the spirit of it quite well, I find.
