Anyone know how to pronounce sidhe? I've run across it in a fantasy book I'm reading. It's refering the fearie folk, or fey. But I can't figure out how to pronounce it, which would be very helpful if I plan on reading it to Will. Thanks!

Some people pronounce it Sheeda, tough.

Well, it's ancient Celtic. Normally, if they want 'Sheeda' to be the pronunciation, it's written that way. (Yes, I read Seven Soldiers, too ;D)

LOL ;D Honestly, I think ancient Celtic is a bit like Latin - they aren't totally certain how it was pronounced, so take their best guess Being a huge fantasy fan, I have read a fair number of novels that featured the Sidhe, and the pronunciation has always been written as 'Shee'. Doesn't mean there is no alternative, though.

We can only deduce from the surviving celtic languages on how the original celtic language was probably once pronounced.
And from the archaeological record ... we actually know very little words of the original celtic language.
And I would personally pronounce "dh" as a soft "th".

thanks Elliot. I knew I could count on you. I never would have gotten to Shee from that spelling, but my knowledge of anything Celtic is very limited. I was trying to say it American and came out with sid-hey or sigh. LOL!

I used to think 'Siddee' from the way it looks. Fortunately, I read the right kind of books ;D
