I know it isn't technically the end of the year, but it's close enough. So whether you live in America or elsewhere, what comes to mind when you think about the sports world of 2006? Share your thoughts with us as we look back on a great year in sports.
I'll start with the Texas/USC National Championship game. No one gave Texas a chance and Vince Young responded with maybe the best game I've seen by an individual player in history. Football IS the ultimate team game, but Vince Young won this game all by himself. His 200 yards passing and rushing were incredible.
Or how about George Mason pulling off upset after upset after upset all the way to the final four? Everyone loves a Cinderella story in the tournament, and they almost pulled it off.
The Tigers, coming from nowhere to make it all the way to the World Series. Just three years ago they had probably the worst year in history, and this year they came out of nowhere, dominating the competition all the way to the World Series.
Andre Agassi called it a career this year as well. While he couldn't go out winning his last tournament, he did provide one last memory, with his back giving out on him he still pulled off a big upset for his last win. I watched it last lonnggggg into the night, and he fought valiantly in the final match of his career.
Or Drew Brees and the New Orleans Saints. Has any player moved to a new team that has made a bigger difference? Without Drew, the Saints are probably winning 5 games. Now he has a shot at breaking Dan Marino's record for most passing yards in a season, and he has the Saints in position to make a serious run at the Super Bowl.
In the NBA, Pat Riley finally won another championship and got Gary Payton his first ring.
Love him or hate him, Barry Bonds started out slow, but heated up to put him in position to break the all time home run record in 2007.
Most recently, Allen Iverson was traded to the Nuggets, one of the rare times in sports that a super star was traded IN season.
That's all I have for now, what are some of yours?
