I wonder what's so great about David Beckham? He's like a circus animal if you ask me, being sold to LA Galaxy for $250 million and then dancing like an exhausted chimpanzee as his loses again 4-0 . Not to mention the loss against FRANCE... But that's just my opinion, I'd like to see what you Brits have to say.

A lot of things, honestly. It's easy to just see the tattoos and the silly squeaky voice and assume there's nothing else there, but there is.
Beckham is far from being the most naturally gifted footballer in the world, but by sheer hard work and dedication he placed himself amongst the best. And despite all the fame and adulation he gets, he's never stepped back from the hard work and he always keeps trying, no matter what, even when the rest of his team has long given up. I've seen Beckham win games pretty much on his own, and you can't say that about many players.
He's been hated, reviled and written off loads of times, but he always responds by putting his head down, working hard and proving his critics wrong on the football pitch, where it counts.
In a sport where the usual thing is to mouth off to the press about how wonderful you are, how crap the opposition are and generally to display an ego out of all proportion to one's actual talent (A far too common fault with many English players, sadly) Beckham has a bad word to say about no-one and always gives the opposition praise, whether his side wins or loses.
The one thing you hear from anyone who's ever played with him is how he just wants to be one of the team - there's no "Look at me, I'm a superstar!" To the rest of us he just comes across as a nice guy. He's never lost that.
He inspires the rest of the England team to heights they can't reach without him, and has done for many years.
He is comfortable with his sexuality, enjoying being a gay icon as well as being swooned over by half the world's women; and he is always kind and considerate to his fans, which many other sports stars are not. He's a good and dedicated Father.
You never read about wild parties, drunkenness or drug abuse. Just more tattoos ;D
So I guess the fact is those of us who don't envy him (And there's plenty who do) just admire him. He's never gonna win any awards for being brain of Britain, but he's a nice guy who loves football with a passion and works hard without letting it all go to his head. Despite being a superstar (And arguably the world's #1 icon right now) he always has time for people.
He's one of us, only more so. Does that make sense? ;D

Well said Elliot, WELL SAID! I've never hated him (mind you ;D) or envied him ( never envy a celebrity, they've got more problems than we do) but I always knew he was a good player, which is exactly why I wonder why he's been doing terriblerecently both with his new club (losing 4-0, 3-0, 2-0, not such a good record, oh wait, there is one good one, 5-2 against an Australian club) and his country (the 1-0 defeat at the hands, or should I say feet, of a demoralized, Zidaneless France) and I hope he can make a good comeback, but at the present rate, he (as far as football is concerned) is "on the downgrade and can't find the brake". Oh well, even if he can't do 1st grade math (remember that one?) at least he knows how to handle himself, and so do you. Even if you just exaggerated a few figures, at least you didn't lose your cool (I'm not sure if I ever recall you losing it on the Larian forum either) which is the sign of having a good disposition while at the same time being able to display passion when it is due. Here's another 2 thumbs up: P.S the dancing chimp was a test, and I liked how you answered with the squeaky voice, again I say, well put.

LOL.
Beckham's good but he's only one guy - and honestly he's not the powerhouse player he once was. Surround him with rubbish (Be it Los Angeles Galaxy or the present England Team) and he's still gonna lose.
A lot of England fans think he should be dropped because he's not as good as he was, despite the fact he's still so obviously so much better than most of the rest of the team. It's crazy to me.
And I have been known to 'reasonable' people until they scream at me, be warned! ;D
If they really want to appoint an England captain for the future, though, I think it should be Owen Hargreaves.

Ah, finally, someone close to my age! Just for the record, don't forget Steve Mclaren originally dropped him from the team after the World Cup 2006 (I think it was an extremely dumb decision to drop Sven-Goran Eriksson, Mclaren proved to be a fool), but after they recalled Beckham, they nearly saved their Euro Cup Qualification. But they didn't manage to pull it off, methinks it had something to do with "dear Steve" not recalling him earlier, but now it's probably too late. Oh well, life goes on and RUSSIA has qualified for the Euro Cup (which makes me happy, by my bloodline I am 25% Russian, descended from the Russian Royal Family that the Bolsheviks and "Commies" mercilessly butchered in the name of more bread for the people, but an untold number of people starved to death, what bitter irony) and let's see what "Becks" can do in the World Cup 2010!

My dad was 14 in England at that time, (it was a part of a school program to learn to speak English) he was living with a low-class family of miners and lived there for 2 weeks, there was also a German student there. So, here's how he described it: "We all gathered around the television, the whole family were obviously really solid England fans, they cheered whenever England got the ball and booed whenever Germany got the ball. The first goal was put by Germany. My German friend hardly cheered when the whole family looked at him with murder in their eyes, so he quickly kept silent. Whenever England put a goal, the whole family would start yelling and cheering at the top of their lungs! Eventually England won 3-1, the family celebrated all day..." I don't blame them, I probably celebrated harder when FRANCE won the World Cup 1998 against BRAZIL! ;D

These days, England fans celebrate if our team manages to get hold of the ball for more than a couple of seconds... How times have changed! ;D
