Alright, well, time for me to pimp a series I really like. If you're looking for a realistic, mature medieval-age epic about the man destined to be the greatest swordsman in Japanese history, along with some spectacular art and a very interesting plot, Takehiko Inoue has created a pretty good one in Vagabond. I'm not going to spoil too much, but I'm going to give you some previews of the amazing art here. ( The pages have been resized here and will fill your screen in their original form. ) It even has a deaf character later on, which I really appreciate. And he's an awesome swordsman as well. Yes, it's read right to left. 24 volumes are out, and it's a great reading experience. I recommend it.

Phil - this is the series you recommended I get? 24 volumes is quite a lot. I just finishes RK and had hoped not to get into another long one. Is it a lot like RK? Or is it much more serious?
Anyway, do you know if there is an anime version? I might be more inclined to get the anime right now than the manga.

No anime version as far as I know, sorry. And yeah, it is. It's more serious than RK. More realistic, too. But there is some comedy in it too (usually very unexpected).
If you are wanting to read a shorter series, then I recommend Basilisk. It's only five volumes long, but the first volume is out now, and I'm sure the next four will follow.
