It may seem a little odd that up until now there has been no serious study of Near Death Experiences, but that is about to change. Doctors are setting up a detailed study. It'll take three years, apparently, and I expect the results to be both controversial and fascinating - but we shall see

I agree with the commentators on that one though; it isn't the first serious study of the subject using such method nor the first "big" or "reliable" one. There are whole departments that do just that since years... The fact that they weren't heard more about probably is indeed because of not reaching unequivocal/uncontroversial results.
I'll be curious to see how this one turns out, but can't help but to think that it likely will turn out similar to the previous ones: with results for a few cases that defy the establishment and suggest such phenomenons, but with a lot of uncertainty.

I think the problem likely lies in the results, yeah...
Let's hope this one gets the publicity, whatever their findings may be.

"Dr Sam Parnia, who is leading the study at University of Southampton, said: 'If you can demonstrate that consciousness continues after the brain switches off, it allows for the possibility that the consciousness is a separate entity." Ya think... I find this no mystery.....We theologians have been saying this for years.. ;D If a person has a spirit or soul, then as the Scripture says, concerning death, "the spirit returns to God who gave it." I think there has been ample credible accounts of "out of body experiences" that can not be refuted.. people come back from one and tell of seeing a shoe on the window sill of the room six stories up from where they are in a hospital and where they have never been, and they go up and check and "walla" --there is the shoe.... I believe it...just can't explain it... ;D I have had a couple of OOB experiences myself.....and I was not "smokin" strange stuff either.... ;D

I agree with you, ss. Astral travel is a well known and accepted thing in the East. It's only the West who seem to 'know better' these days...

Oh but you don't have to smoke things. There are lots of other possibilities ;D
My view on the matter is very sceptical, but I find it very interesting since so many people say they experienced it.
