Scientists from California have been able to produce alcohol fuel that's even more efficient than ethanol... From E.Coli bacteria; and it looks promising. Article here (click).

It sounds promising except they'd need to make sure of spillage, containment and ensuring the form it's in, will be safe for both humans and the environment.
