I propose a less nerdie topic - look around for historic places in your environment and share. As I will be moving to Berlin soon, I came up with this one, which many of you may have seen - in movies. It's the Glienicke Bridge across the river Havel, which connects Potsdam and Berlin. It is famous because spy exchanges have been performed on it - in reality and in fiction. Built in 1907, it was closed to traffic during the Berlin wall. Nowadays 1.000 times more people cross it per day than in the entire 40 years of its closure.

Ok, I think I can add a few historic places from here too. I live in a small town called Bornem, which is called the Green Heart of Brabant, with its forests and the river De Schelde and is also the green lung of the province of Antwerp.
This part of the river has been used for different scenes for movies like "De zaak Alzheimer", "Team Spirit", "Koko Flanel" and a famous Belgian TV show called "Stille Waters" (for the Belgian members ) Bornem started to florish when a Spanish nobleman Pedro Coloma came here in the 16th century. Most of the historical buildings here are build in his name. The castle of Bornem Many different noblemen have lived there over the years. The old city hall and part of the church Apart from the buildings we have a yearly mars that is called De Dodentocht (English translation). With his 100Km that you can do by foot or by bike, it's one of the most famous attractions for the hikers and bikers. It started in 1970 with only 65 participants is now one of Europe's biggest hiking events with over 9.000 participants.

I didn't knew Bornem had such a rich history. But then, behind some of the most insignificant things there can be an enormous history lying hidden.

May I add to Berlin? Some last pieces of The Wall, don't need to add the history to that one I hope. Theater des Westens (theatre of the west), build in the 1860s in wilhelminic historicism (wilhelminism is the german equivalent to the victorian era). Probably not he most impressive thing ever but I worked there and it is fab inside and out. Ok now... what about South Australia? The Mitchell Building, part of the University Of Adelaide, build 1874 (exaclty 40 years after South Australia was officially settled - by 636 people), education in South Australia was revolutionary because the status of SA was new. The british goverment decided that SA shall be without religious discrimination or unemployment. SA is the only australian state NOT settled by convicts but by free citizens, a lot of Germans to be exact, because of problems for lutherans in Germany at that time. Not exactly old but pretty historically cool is Adelaide Chinatown. First build in the 1970/80, it is a very new thing but a good sign of SA's anti-discrimination idea. You can find asian shops (especially vietnam & chinese), chinese medical practitioners, acupuncturists, martial arts practitioners, herbalists and chinese churches.

Very nice places Kitty. I think I shall add a few pics of some temples in Egypt, if that's ok?

I think I shall add a few pics of some temples in Egypt, if that's ok? If those wouldn't qualify as historic, what would?

I'm too lazy to do it all over in this thread, but here are a few more historical places that can't be missed in this topic! By the way, I've seen the "Old Cataract Hotel", where Agatha Christie wrote "Death on the Nile"

Hmmm... I'd list some historical places from Singapore but the country is pretty new(less than 70 years old). Also, quite a bit of the architecture is from the days when we were part of a Dutch colony before being ceded to the British. So, nothing much to see about it, I think.

^ you could post a picture of the Changi Airport - I landed there 4 times now (and in 6 days another time and then again in July) and it's quite impressive - not old but pretty interesting wiki says it's the 19th busiest airport in the world and heck, it is busy when you have to get your next flight from there! The coolest is the that if you have to wait for your follow-up flight over 5 hours, they grant you a special passport that allows you to leave the airport for a city tour. It also has openair gardens what is pretty nice. The down part is that you have to take your shoes off what is annoying... Singapore is very afraid of drugs brought into the country so they control very very much. But yea, just an idea

Just as an idea, why not start a picturesque MODERN buildings thread?

Tomorrow the 40th Dodentocht in my town will start. My town is getting ready for the biggest event with tents, burger places and all kinds of performances. I'm gonna watch the start tomorrow and try to make nice pictures to post here.
