I can't help but wonder why the government keeps being retarded enough in these movies to piss off the aliens with the advanced technology. You know what movies I'm talking about. Still, never stops me from enjoying them. ;D Killerzzz

I just came back from watching District 9 just now. Really good, in a disturbing kind of way. That´s the non-spoiler version. Spoiler version ahead, so skip if you don´t want to know. This movie hit my rage buttons, I have to admit. Not because it artistically or technically did anything wrong... quite the opposite, in fact. No, I was irritated because the movie did its job too well. It convincingly made me sympathize with the aliens, to the point where I wanted most of the humans in the movie to die. ;D To be honest, I can't think of one sympathetic human character in the entire film. The MNU are a bunch of totalitarian thugs who want to exploit the aliens while playing on bigotry, fear and insecurity of the human public. The African arms dealers are nearly as bad. Even the lead character starts off as a bumbling jerk who abuses the aliens pretty horribly. And even after he realizes what a scumbag organization he works for, he is still a selfish jerk for most of the film. Granted the ending redeems him somewhat, but still... this is a hero? There's also some elements that are left hanging, but I'm not certain if this is to create ambiguity or set the stage for a sequel. Even so, it would have been nice to know a little more about what happens after the main action. If there is a sequel, maybe we will. Hopefully the DVD will have some director's commentary on that. That said, I think all of this is intentional and meant to push buttons in the viewer. It's a good, thought-provoking film, and it makes really good use of genre to get its point across. Disturbing though it is, it's an effective SF film, and one of the few SF films I've seen that understands what the genre is supposed to do.

I saw this flick yesterday -- and I must say, it was very good. SPOILERS GALORE COMING. That's the point -- there isn't supposed to be one redeemable human character in the flick. I think that's b/c it's a satirical look on the entire human race. It has dystopia written all over it. This is the evolution of this person's character -- to transform entirely from a jerk and into a better person. And look what it took him to get there -- it took him actually being forced to to shoot an alien not at his own will, to start to turn him into a sympathizer with the aliens. Even at the end, the transformation is complete -- and for now, he actually becomes one of them literally. There's a good deal of nods to Half-Life 2 here, if you ask me -- the gravity gun weapon; an entire section called District 9 is blocked off for one race (The Prawn, which are the alien-race) -- which is like City 17 in Half-Life 2 (in HL2 -- in City 17, The Humans are under the rule of The Combine); the lead character of D9 looks a like Gordon Freeman w/ the beard and all; and the alien species of the prawn are similar to the intelligent aliens that helped Freeman out.

D... yeah, I´m in agreement with you there. It was indeed intentionally bleak (probably to stir up awareness of real-world issues), and it was supposed to cause the reaction I got. So I can still enjoy it, knowing that. I did get a definite video game vibe from it, too, especially towards the end with all the mech battles. Not sure on specific references, though, but it wouldn´t much surprise me.

So I can still enjoy it, knowing that. Yes, I think the film was (obviously) also referring to apartheid, as well -- especially since these events of "legal separation" did take place in South Africa; not with aliens, though. Happened with humans -- absolutely sad and completely wrong. Mechwarrior games would be an obvious reference, I think. FEAR 2 and Riddick: Butcher Bay also do have some mech-sequences in their games, as well. I'm sure there's probably others, as well...but, those come to my mind.

Saw it and loved it! I think you guys already summed it up. ;D
Just gonna add a little conflict I had with someone else that watched it with me.
>They were put off a bit by their difficulty in understanding the accents of most of the characters. <I told them that the heavy accents just made it more genuine. >They said they can keep their accents, but speak more comprehensibly (or slowly). <I said NO, that would be less genuine. They are going to speak like random average people from different areas and not clear up their speech for us people in North America. It's a movie about different peoples, different cultures, with something that concerns people from all over the world (aliens landed :0 ) and was not made for North America, but for everyone. >They said STILL, they should make it easier to understand for everyone (this person is a business person, and was probably thinking that more of the Average Joe would enjoy it and therefore make it more of a success). <I said NO again for all the reasons I said, because this is not meant to be a false film to make Joe-Shmoe happy (me being an artistic person who enjoys GOOD ART.
Yeah, so I loved it too. Awesome! ;D

Beautiful movie. It was awesome! One thing I heard is when they interviewed the civilians about what they thought of the aliens, that part wasn't scripted. That was stock footage of people talking about other races entering their city.
"They're spending so much money to keep them here, when they could be spending it on other things. At least they're keeping them separate from us."
"They must just go. I don't know where, but they must just go."
"Well, I could understand if they were just from another country or something, but they're not even human!"
From what I've heard, those are quotes of humans talking about humans.
