So who went and saw the latest Tarantino flick? I ended up liking Inglorious Basterds a fair bit, even though I probably shouldn't in some respects. If this were a straight war movie, there would be clear problems with it... the history is noticeably wrong, for one thing. Except this isn't a straight war flick. Some elements seem to be so ludicrously over the top that I have to take it as farce or comedy. Taken that way, it works a lot better for me. But then, this movie isn't really about the Basterds at all. I'll let that sink in for a moment. The high point was easily the character of Hans Landa, the SS officer who is the main antagonist of the film. Even though he can be brutal and creepy at times, he comes across as so likable and so stylish that it's hard not to respect him. I honestly want to see more of this guy. Anyway, I don't think I'll go into much more detail, except to say that it's an enjoyable film, if not in the way I expected. I can't say it's for everyone, but for what it is, it met my expectations.

If this were a straight war movie, there would be clear problems with it... the history is noticeably wrong, for one thing. Ummm....this movie is NOT about getting history correct in any way. This film lies in the alternative history genre. What that genre is: it is when you take historical characters, places, events -- and completely spin that into a totally different "What if" direction and go from there; often into more of a fantasy direction. Hence the opening line, where it states in the very beginning -- "In a Nazi-Occupied France." That opening line is telling you right off the bat that this is NOT a historical film. That event NEVER occurred in history, obviously. A lot of computer games have used this genre -- Turning Point: Fall of Liberty; Wolfenstein series; Freedom Fighters; Iron Storm. BTW, I did go and see this Tarantino comedy/action/drama film yesterday -- and yes, it was freakin' awesome. Loved it. Bingo. This is the way you're supposed to take it -- since most of Tarantino's flicks are mixtures of comedy, action, and drama. Correct. Most of the characters here are "bastards" (metaphorically -- as in not being nice), anyways -- blinded by going for the "greater good" (hence it being in quotes here), revenge, and doing wrong.

I loved it. Better than Kill Bill, not as good as Pulp Fiction or Jackie Brown. Great film. Very tense and the violence was effective.
