I thought it would be fun to start a new thread series. ;D So instead of "The Best... BADOOMBADUMP!", we'll have "Your Cast For... Badoongadangyer!" Let us start with the upcoming film, The Hobbit. Feel free to discuss other's opinions and suggest any number of actors you like (big or small). I won't say too much right now, but I will tell you that it seems the role of Bilbo is under much discussion at the moment. Many people wish Ian Holm could retake his role since he did so well in The Lord of the Rings, but others are saying he's just to old. The response is that wonders could be done with makeup and CGI aids etc. The response to that was: he is WAY TOO OLD; they were pushing it in the first movie with the flash back, and now it's another ten years later and Holm will be the ripe old age of... 80! I'm gonna have to agree with letting Holm stay out of this one. No CGI and makeup will divert attention from his age, especially if he's the lead and must move around like an agile young hobbit. Now, some have suggested the actor Martin Freeman, and is it just me, or does he seem to be the perfect choice? He's got a somewhat goofy and youthful look about him despite his age, and I think he could pull of excited and frightened little Bilbo quite well. Whoops! Discuss. Killerzzz

There are four main parts that need casting, really: Bilbo, Gandalf, Thorin Oakenshield and the voice of Smaug.
Gandalf of course is already locked, with Ian McKellen more than capable of returning to do another amazing job in the role.
Smaug the dragon needs to be voiced by someone who can project power, intelligence and cunning - not to mention strength and evil. You need a terrific voice to do all that, so I'm going with Patrick Stewart.
Thorin the Dwarf leader needs to project power and presence and he also needs to be big built. I'm blanking on good choices for him.
Bilbo... The main character, the hero and the main selling point of the film... Yeah, tough one. Ian Holm is definitely too old, as is Derek Jacobi, sadly, as he'd have been great, too, in his younger days. I have a sneaking suspicion that David Tennant might do a really good job, though. He has the range, the versatility and can look both smart enough and innocent enough to be the young Bilbo. Yeah, I'll go with him...

As long as Ian McKellen is in, I'm happy.

Ron's dad from Harry Potter might do ok as Bilbo, but he seems a little too goofy and loveable. Oh wait, that's Arthur from Hitchhiker's Guide. They look the same!! Yeah, I can get on board with that.
In a perfect world, we'd hop in the time machine and get Ian Holm from 10-20 years ago. Alas, 80 freaking years old already!
I don't know if Agent Smith is reprising Elrond and if Serkis is doing Gollum again (who else could play Gollum, now?) but they should.
I don't like Patrick Stewart as Smaug. He might have a regal and powerful voice, but it's not the voice of the great monstrous worm. It needs a rough edge, a wicked edge.

John Rhys-Davies as Smaug cos he did such a great job as Treebeard in the Two Towers.

I have a sneaking suspicion that David Tennant might do a really good job, though. He has the range, the versatility and can look both smart enough and innocent enough to be the young Bilbo. Yeah, I'll go with him... I haven't see any of his acting, but from the pictures his face seems to have a similar... attitude? as Martin Freeman, so I guess I can't say no to him. ;D Ron's dad from Harry Potter might do ok as Bilbo, but he seems a little too goofy and loveable. Oh wait, that's Arthur from Hitchhiker's Guide. They look the same!! Yeah, I can get on board with that. Don't they just? ;D For a good while I thought they were the same actor. Then someone said I was crazy, and it turned out they were right. On both accounts. John Rhys-Davies as Smaug cos he did such a great job as Treebeard in the Two Towers. I'd say yes, but I have the same problem with him that Flix had with Patrick Stewart. He might have a regal and powerful voice, but it's not the voice of the great monstrous worm. It needs a rough edge, a wicked edge. Rhys-Davies has got a darn awesome voice, but can he make it eeeviiil enough? I don't know. Some people in the IMDB discussion I saw a while back put forward Tim Curry as a potential Smaug. He does have a wicked sounding voice, but then we turn around and have the other problem: is it immense, powerful, deep enough? Eeeeeh.... I don't know about him. I'm not feeling it. And for discussion's sake, another person I've just thought of but am also not sure about is Bill Nighy. I wonder if he could fit it... He has of late had roles of malice and power, you know? Davey Jones (Pirates of the Carribean) and Viktor (Underworld). I think that for real cast choices, he might be seriously considered by the makers of The Hobbit. He might not have the deepest voice, but he's got power behind it, and with a little enhancement, it could be very good. Yes? No? Maaaaybe? Killerzzz

I thought of Curry, and while I love him as an actor, I think his voice lacks the power and the depth. I'm liking Bill Nighy, though, I must admit. That's a good thought, Kaz...

I'm going with Hildor on this one, as long as Ian McKellen plays Gandalf, I'm sure the rest will figure out itself. They did a great job casting for the LOTR trilogy, so I trust them to do the same for The Hobbit. Besides John Rys-Davies already did a great Gimli too, his voice would work better for Thorin II Oakenshield. But how about Sean Connery for Smaug huh? He did a wonderful job as Draco in Dragonheart

I wouldn't be TOO sold on their ability to cast well. There was a strong movement to get Connery for Gandalf, apparently... Thankfully, it fell through.

@gal But again, can connery seem evil enough? ;D Vile, wicked? Though I seem to recall him playing a bad guy before, I don't remember how that went... Avengers! Right? Or a title like that? @elliot Oooo, yeah... don't think I woulda enjoyed that as much. I like the fragile old man/ powerful wizard thing that the chosen Gandalf had. Even when Connery is playing a fragile old man he doesn't seem like a fragile old man (to me at least). Killerzzz

Connery is the UK's answer to Harrison Ford - great on screen persona, but couldn't act his way out of a paper bag. Been in some great films, don't get me wrong, but has he EVER played anything other than the same character?

Speaking of Harrison Ford and Sean Connery.... My favorite role Connery has ever played. "Junior!"

Oh I know, Gal. I just said "Junior!" because that's what he's always yelling out the whole movie, he never calls Indiana by his name til the end.
