Modern communications get us here - whether really for added value or service may be debated.
A distraction is a distraction, in something which is potentially dangerous to individuals as much as third parties, hence I agree that it should be restricted...
...or solved by giving truckers helmets with voice activated wireless communications, head up displays in the wind shields, auto pilots with distance control, lane monitoring and automatic brakes (technologies all available)...
Too expensive you say? After all, truckers aren't pilots? Well, in a way they are, aren't they?
What will be the discussion when a truck, with a driver distracted by his electronic communications, hits a school bus and causes many fatalities?

I'm pretty sure the ban on texting/talking on the phone while driving in Britain applies to that kind of stuff, too. I know taxis have radios, but they just talk while driving with eyes on the road.
So yeah, I don't have a whole lot of sympathy for the truckers on this one. Feel sorry for them as people, with the extremely boring long distance hauling, but not to the extent I think they should be allowed to put other people in harm's way.
