I pray to god the estimates are too highNew Moon has the best opening day gross of a film ever now. I hope that Dark Knight still has it beaten for attendence though, and if New Moon's weekend gross beats out Dark Knight I will be very cross.

never underestimate the drawing power of chick flicks. 99% of my female colleagues are into that Twilight thing just because of the pretty boy dude.

I'm with Jang on this one. And as Twilight is a teenage girl chick flick, that effect only gets doubled...

Jang is about 300,000,000% correct. The most powerful demographic when it comes to things like chick flicks, "cute" guys in competitions (yes, even singing competitions), etc. is excited teenage girls. Don't underestimate their voting/polling/queue-ing power. The twilight series has developed a solid following by teenage girls, factor in all the teenage girls in the US (let's see... probably about 40 million?), plus their boyfriends (yeah, if the guy asks where they'd like to go for their next date, you can guess what she'd ask), plus their parents if they're under-aged (of course, of course)... And you can get a 100 million-strong audience in the US alone! Of course, this is assuming all the teenage girls in the US are fans of the twilight series, which is not so (I'd estimate a quarter of them, actually). This puts the number down to a more tidy 25-30 million or so. But then again, a true fan tends to re-watch a movie in the cinema 5 times or so, so that shoots the potential number past 100 million again... And let's not forget the worst part: these estimates, however inaccurate they may be, are for the US alone. There's still the whole rest of the World...

Yeah, while the fetishization plays an important role, it doesn't matter as much as the fact that the Twilight series has a serious fan base. And you get your most reliable fan bases generally in the teenage/young adult sec. If it was only (even mostly) about pretty boys, it wouldn't have hit this level. Also, if I remember correctly, a lot of the fans were pissed when the main guy originally was cast because he wasn't pretty enough. Plus, there are actual male fans that aren't just going with their girlfriends. never underestimate the drawing power of chick flicks. Well, the previous holder was a bit of a dick flick, so it makes sense that both sides of the aisle would have drawing power. I never thought of it that way. That article puts it in a whole new perspective. Perhaps I should watch the movies now...find out what makes the fairer sex swoon.

And the whole "dick flick" thing is a term we actually used in film studies, wasn't trying to be an ass there! I just love that it is used in some circles in the academia world.
As much as I dislike the series, it has been bothering me quite a lot how a large majority of males have been responding to it. It isn't just that its poorly written, acted, etc; like the article says, it is seen as preposterous in a male dominated genre (Though, in reality, all genres are male dominated in the strictest sense. Including chick flicks) and most guys don't even realize it. Media is completely male dominated.
I might type up the numbers just to show you how few women are involved in films. It is a very disturbing and sad trend.

About the one thing missing from the article was the amount of homo-erotic material that goes into a lot of 'geek culture', which always makes me laugh. Superhero stuff especially seems to be filled with it, but even SF is not immune. Male power fantasies are by their very nature fetishistic, I suppose, so homo-eroticism won't be too far away.
As for 'dick flick' - I can't say I've ever heard the term before, but it's totally apt and made me laugh.
I know what you mean with a lot of stuff supposedly aimed at women being male dominated (And thus tends to fail badly), Zee. It may be bad in the media generally, but it's downright awful in US comics, where no-one seems to have the faintest clue that women might actually like different stuff to men.
