This movie was horrible. They threw Pocahontas into the Halo universe and spent $500 million and expect 10 Oscars, which they'll probably get a few of.
1/5 stars for a few interesting shots and because I don't think I can give it lower.

I didn't mind it. But the story was weaker than I'd like.

I thought the story was awful, a boring rehash of every "preserve nature and the spirit of the earth against the greed and corruption of outsiders" story you've ever seen. Predictable plot turns, simplistic morality, shallow characters. There were moments that transcended the bloated movie they were part of, but they were few and far between. Impressive special effects and integration of digital motion capture and real actors was wasted on this thing.

Avatar is a massive technical achievement and much of the scenery is both breathtaking and beautiful. Storywise it´s rather bland and predictable - excatly what could be expected.
Still - it´s definately worth watching the 3D version forthe effects alone.

So it's the new version of Final Fantasy: The Spirits Within, basically? That the consensus?

It was if you are interested in technical innovation. Sadly that's the ONLY reason to watch it, though...

It was better than The Spirits Within. It wasn't a lifeless piece of crap like the FF movie. But that doesn't save the horrible writing. Even the plots were the same - "oh we've got to save the planet's lifeforce from the maniacal army guy with superpowerful weapons."
The attempts at comedy sucked. The action scenes dragged on far long, as did other non-action scenes ("I'm learning to fly on a pterodactyl thing! Whoa, I'm not so good, I'd better soar around for 15 minutes straight doing nothing"). At least Avatar attempted these elements though. FF was just non-stop borefest.

I concur Flix, but even go farther, It was a combination of how we treated the indians/blacks/ (anybody non-white) and how frail the "hero" was to turn on the establishment...and of course they were killing "americans marines" (them dastardly bastards)to the fun of most of the watchers. After all those "perfect" citizens of Pandora were a almagamation of most of the races on planet earth.-- I did not notice any "non-white" marines.?? coulda missed it though... They even had hair that let them tune in to "mother Nature" it was blatantly religious Pantheism in its most "perfect" form. Anybody remember the Lion King..?? But, I loved the special effects and did not have a problem with sitting for the longer time frame. ;D

Yeah, that was the worst part: all that heavy-handed moralizing on how the war-like Americans should leave pristine naturalistic cultures alone.
