With this decade ending only a month from now it's time to look back. So here are the best films from each year, with some commentary If I feel it needs it (I'm not doing a top 10 yet because it would take even longer than this)
So here we go for each individual year:
2000:
Unbreakable- Really in a year that Gladiator came out that could have gotten it but since I've never seen it this film gets it. In a time when there were no really good comic book films released (X-Men being an exception) this one showed what the genre could become in two years when Spider-Man 1 was released.
2001- A lot of my favorite films from the 2000's came out this year, some foreign language, some guilty pleasure, and just some really good films so it's very hard to decide but in the end I chose:
Amelie- A modern fairytale, with odd humor and great acting this film was fun to watch. I have searched high and low for it on DVD and it is a worthwhile addition to anyone's collection.
2002- This is an important year for most people here as it had the first comic book film that was truly a blockbuster, and it only took a Spider to do it. Only 3 films really meet my standards for this year so I'm going to give it to:
Minority Report- It just edges out Spider-Man despite the hollywood ending this one was just a fun and wonderful action/mystery with great performances all around, which is rare for an action movie.
2003- Another year with a lot of films I didn't watch or if I did I didn't remember. One misses the list because of a techincality so:
28 Days Later- gets it by default really. This gets it on a technicality because it didn't come out in the US until 2003 despite being out in the UK months before. It redefined the Zombie genre and had good commentary also.
2004- Another year with a lot of movies I saw and a lot of ones I enjoyed also. I would say I am going to get a lot of hate for this one but it's certainly the most memorable movie from this year:
Anchorman: the Legend of Ron Burgandy- One of my favorite movies from this decade as it's just so over the top and out there at times. A decent comedy in the sub-genre of throw everything at the wall and see what sticks.
2005- This year had several biggies released. The last of the Star Wars prequels, Batman Begins, and Brokeback Mountain. But which one was the best? Here we go:
Brokeback Mountain- No it's not because of the homosexual elements in it but because it's a pretty decent tragedy, and showcases the late (I am NOT going to say great) Heath Ledger in one of his best roles. Though I take issue with the character of Jack Twist being such a whiny little girl, the performances of many of the actors and actresses make up for it.
2006- Not much to say on this year, it was almost like 2001 in the idea that a lot of films I really enjoyed were released this year. But this one nearly gets tied with my other favorite film of the year:
Children of Men- A great thriller and a nice intelligent movie. Good performances also. More of a guy film but still I enjoyed it a lot.
2007- Wow a kinda bad year for films so another year where a film gets it kinda by default:
Into the Wild-Like I said this film gets it by default not because it holds up on multiple viewings but because it was better than most films released in the year.
2008- I am going to get killed when I don't put Dark Knight as the best film of this year...But it gets it as I barely remember any of the films that came out last year. So here we go:
Dark Knight
2009- Not quite done yet but still a lot of films I enjoyed. This is my favorite:
Star Trek- I have watched this a half dozen times this year so far. Last film I did that with was the Original Spider-Man film.
So that's my top films for each year. Expect a top 10 soon.
