Haha! Don't worry, I haven't heard any such possibility on the horizon. BUT! I still think it would be fun to try and make a cast for an imaginary one. ;D Now, if we're remaking the '39 movie with Judy Garland, here's some of my cast... And this is a risky cast, especially since I feel a really good remake would be impossible, but hell, let's try it out! Scarecrow: Jim Carrey. He is so this sort of goof. Tin Man: David Hyde Pierce. This was suggested to me, and I could kinda dig it. Similar voice and build, and manner for that matter. Cowardly Lion: Will Ferrell. Under the condition that it not in any way be a Will Ferrell movie. I think his childish face is perfect (picture the original Lion's goofy face), and as long as they force him to actually act, I think he could pull it off really well. As for the rest of the cast, I can't think of any yet. Got some ideas? Dorothy: probably the hardest role to cast, imo. Wicked Witch of the West: Someone with a pointy face! ;D Fortune-Teller/Oz Entrance Guy/Driver/Wizard's Guard/Wizard of Oz: I have no idea! Someone who can pull of many roles. Aunt Em/Uncle Ben: meh, whoever. Killerzzz

I think we could get away with a teen Dorothy, which means you could update the film a bit by adding the layers of cynicism so popular to a modern audience. Dorothy needs to be a good singer, of course, which leads me to my casting - and doubtless many here to apoplexy ;D
Dorothy - Miley Cyrus. She sings, she's box office gold and the part of Dorothy requires a singer far more than an actress. So I think she'd be ideal. If you want to keep Dorothy really young, Faryl Smith would be ideal - IF she can act, which is not known. She can certainly sing.
The Tin Man - Keanu Reeves can portray wooden and detached like no-one else. It's his natural state, in fact, which is why he worked so well as Neo in The Matrix. Tin Man needs the kind of stiffness Keanu brings to every role! ;D
The Scarecrow - Johnny Depp. No-one plays weird better than Depp and that includes funny-weird.
The Cowardly Lion - Ewan MacGregor. A fine actor who can deal with the many emotional states required of a good Cowardly Lion. Can sing, too, which will help.

Someone just suggested to me the best person to play the wizard (and the other parts of that actor): Robin Williams! The guy is awesome, can easily slip into different roles and personalities, be goofy and funny and touching and do it all perfectly! Someone also suggested Neil Patrick Harris as Tin Man. ;D Now I'm wondering if they gave it a more comedic angle... Johnny Depp as Scarecrow, Harris as Tin Man, Farrell as Lion, Williams as Oz, and...... JIM CARREY AS THE WICKED WITCH! No? How about now? Okay, now I'm just being silly. (or am i? :0 ) ANOTHER suggestion I've heard in my discussion with people on this topic is that they NOT even bother trying to make it like the Judy Garland movie. This person said that they should try something way out there completely different. A re-telling that's not trying to cover old material. Turn it into a fantasy epic (I guess sort of what was done to Alice in Wonderland). To do this, I think they'd have to get all they can from the book. Heck, they could pull it off if done properly. Hmm... Killerzzz

Except that Robin Williams comes with an automatic 'Caution! Sick Bucket Required!' tag for all his films. If you want to be utterly drowned in schmaltz, Williams is your man. If not, avoid him like the plague.
I could see Carrey more as the Wizard, honestly. I kinda like Aly's suggestion of SJP as the Wicked Witch...

Tim Burton gave me a call, for an audition as the Wicked Witch, but I'm in Crete by that time... ;D
I do like the idea of Johnny Depp as Scarecrow, if it would be a Tim Burton movie. How about Helena Bonham Carter for Witch and Christina Ricci for Dorothy? I wouldn't mind if it was gonna be a more darker movie.

Ricci's much too old, these days - and, more importantly, looks it.

I wouldn't put Johnny Depp as the scarecrow, he's too quirky and imposing where as the scarecrow is more clumsy and jovial. I was going to suggest Dustin Hoffman but he probably doesn't have the youth and agility to pull it off. Jim Carrey is probably the best option. There's so many options for the Wicked Witch. Michelle Pfeiffer, Meryl Streep, ... There's been so many "witches" in movies it's clear there's many people who can play them. Dorothy has already been played by Zooey Deschanel. She may bring too much of the previous movie into this one. Going through a list of young actresses, Kirsten Dunst isn't a bad pick. Johnny Depp might be better playing the Wizard. Or Morgan Freeman.
