Juts wanted to give some advice for those who're having trouble with creating a character for Awakening.
STEP 1
You have 24 points to spread across 4 stats. You have to have atleast 1 point in each stat, but no more than 10 in a stat. (This is the requirement/limitation for humans.) This is where you decide what kind of character you want.
Strength - If you want a character that does a lot of damage when he hits, then you'll want a lot of points in strength.
Agility - If you want a character that's fast, has more attacks and has a high defense, then put points into agility. You'll get 1 extra attack for every 5 points.
Intellect - This is all about magic, as far as I can tell. You have to have atleast 1 point, but you'll have to have 5 points to cast any magic. Without play-testing, I can't say what good it would do to have 2, 3 or 4 points. So if you don't want magic, I'd say put 1 point in, but if you want magic, put at least 5. The more points, the more mana you'll have.
Endurance - this is how tough you are. It determines how many hit points you have. The more points here, the more hit points you'll have and the more damage you can take before dying.
Examples:
Strong Tough guy - all about strength and endurance.
Strength: 10
Agility: 3
Intellect: 1
Endurance: 10
Rogue - swift is the key, with strength and endurance second.
Strength: 6
Agility: 10
Intellect: 1
Endurance: 7
Spell-caster - Intellect is the most important, but need high agility or high endurance to survive.
Strength: 1
Agility: 7
Intellect: 10
Endurance: 6
These are extreme examples that are not really balanced. They just max out the key stat for their type of character.
STEP 2
24 points for skills.
There are many skills listed in the manual to choose from. Choose the ones that compliment the type of character you want. A fighter will choose parry and a couple of weapon skills. A rogue would want open locks, stealth, traps. A magic user would definitely have to have spellcraft and read/write.
There are also team skills such as tutor to teach others what you know as well as heal, to help keep your friends alive.
Then there are fun ones like cooking and singing that just add flavor to your character. Besides, who knows when they might come in handy.
STEP 3
BY now, you have a general idea of your character based on stats and skills. Now's the time to come up with a character description.
You can start with a physical description - how tall, hair color, eye color. You can even define weight, skin color, build. And another noticable physical characteristics, such as a scar, tatoo, birthmark.
Then move onto personality and/or background. You don't have to write a lot. Just enough to get a sense of where this person has come from and what motivates them.
Of course, for Awakening, much of the person's history is not remembered at the beginning.
STEP 4
Filling out the rest.
HP: Hit points are based on endurance. Take your endurance number and times it by ten. That's your hit points.
AR: Armor Rating. Right now, no one has any armor, so just take your agility number and parry number and add them together.
Mana: Take your intellect number and times it by 10.
Speed: Take your agility number and times it by 10.
Lift: Take your strength number and times it by 10.
That's all for now. Any questions?
