Anyone here got the new Star Wars Saga Edition? Or has anyone played Star Wars RPG before?
One of my friends picked up the book and we made up characters and started a sorta random fighting scenario just to get used to the system and into turned into an adventure.
It's really cool so far. I've liked how things are simplified and streamlined. Skills are really nice now - you're either trained or not in a skill. Training gives you a +5 in the skill. Skill focus gives you another +5. Otherwise, you just have the related stat and half your level to add to the roll. You can do most skills untrained except like force use, or whatever.
There are feats, but then there are also talents. Talents are different enough from feats and add some pretty cool things. Like my Noble character chose wealth and each level she goes up, she gets 5,000 credits times her new level. Pretty sweet!
I'm really looking forward to what else they put out for this system, and hope that it's not all miniature related.

I've played some Star Wars in the past, Sarah. But it was a long time ago, and the game I played was a much earlier edition. I haven't played at all recently, unfortunately, but I still have all of my old rulebooks. Still, it was a fun game, and I found that the rules were reasonably simple when I played. I'm not sure how the game has changed in later editions, as I haven't looked at the newer editions. Still, it sounds like the designers have done good things with the new system.

I played it a bit, back in the day. It's been a good few years now, though. I was a 'Brash Pilot' I think... Can't really remember, now. I got to stir up trouble in my X-Wing, I do recall ;D

LOL. Yeah, Star Wars is a fun universe no matter what the rules. Well, if either of you feel like getting back into it, now's the time, or soon anyway since they're sure to come out with lots of sourcebooks. But even then, the one book is all you need to start. Has all the player, DM and monsters rules you need to get going.
And it looks very nice. I'd recommend just taking a look at it next time you go to a bookstore that regularly carries D&D products.

Try it sometime lews. If you can't get some friends together to play, you could always try the video games. Knights of the Old Republic 1 & 2 are both very good RPG games.

I've only played some of the first one, but both Will and his friend have played thorugh the first and second. They didn't complain of any challenge level problem. What I've played of the first one is a lot of fun. I've enjoy the story quite a bit. I haven't seen any problems with it not being challenging enough. But I guess that's more of a personal preference. How did you like the story and characters?

They were quite good, especially the first one in that aspect. Both games contained too many too easy fights though. Especially the second one, which were filled with fights where you killed one enemy/round and the enemies couldn't touch you, but there were allways 20 enemies, so every battle took 20 rounds anyway... KotOR 2 was filled with those kinds of fights. The more you got into the games, the more of those fights you saw until the end of the game where you did nothing but it...

Hi Sarah, long time no speak (sorry about that). Is this a rewrite of the previous system or a completely new one? I used to play star wars quiet a bit as did others here, who shall remain nameless

Übereil - hmm... I see what you mean about the fighting. That does seem lame. Well, all I can hope is that the characters & story stay good to keep my interest through the fighting.
Konrad - I'm not sure if it's a complete rewrite or new system, I've never played before. The Saga Edition takes a lot of elements from D&D, but simplifies and streamlines.

Like most RPG's both games starts quite well (especially the first one) but drops in quality the closer to the end it gets.
And what Hec said might very well be true. I still only enjoyed them moderatelly (the first more than the second, since the second was underdeveloped due to timeproblems. Alrik posted a link somewhere to a "reproduce KotOR2" fanproject site. I might check it out some day).

I've played the West End Games version of the RPG several years ago, and I quite liked it.
Currently, I've acquired the - I think - last ones of the the Star Wars Adventure Journal books to make my collection complete - especially later ones are quite hard to find.
I've got two for sale, by the way, Number 12 and ... I think it was number 4.
Number 14 is what I still don't have.

I finally bought my own copy of the Saga Edition. We were playing a bit with friends, but our schedules conflict now. It was a lot of fun, though. It's simplified, but there's a lot of room for creating unique characters. Will and I may be joining an online game through the Wizards website. Still have to see if the DM accept our submissions.

FYI, Sarah. The Saga edition of star wars is a re-write and wizards pre-cursor to the new 4th edition D&D that is coming in March. It apparently has a lot of the new rules but still keeps some of the old ones. General opinion is that its no better than the last. So take from that what you will. (I myself have not played it yet)

The Saga Edition is rather D20, or am I wrong ?
Once, I had a small and *very* short-lived own commentary series called "Alrik's different angle" on RPGDot ... Then, the concept of one rule system -> different worlds was new to me, so I believed that using the (A)D&D rules for Star Wars degenerated Star Wars to being merely one among many worlds under the D&D umbrella (to clarify: Star Wars became - from that perspective a fantasy universe with wizards, D&D spells etc. ... not a universe of its own).
This commentary was the last one.

We have played Saga Edition and have the newest ship book. It is D20. However, it is a very simplified and streamlined system so that the action is much more fast paced and flashy like a movie, rather than being overly detailed, which feels like a strategy game, which is what D&D can be.
Saga Edition is different from D&D. It doesn't feel like you're playing a D&D version of Star Wars. It is Star Wars. It's own universe and rules. Even with D&D 4.0 coming out and going to be the same system, I don't think it will feel the same. But I may be wrong. However, we won't be playing 4.0 any time soon as we almost have all of the 3.5 D&D books, which is a huge investment. So we'll be playing 3.5 for many many years.
