There's also some commentary from Stuart Immonen on Nextwave, for those interested. Have to admit, one thing he said really annoyed me. Specifically, this statement: "I wasn't familiar with any of the characters, frankly, so I didn't feel obliged to preserve their original looks. I mean, I suppose the Boom Boom usenet fan club might be upset, but who cares...?"Because part of the job of handling a mainstream series is research. Attention to detail. Part of capturing the character properly is at least making sure the character at least looks recognizable. Otherwise, why bother with obscure characters to start with? This is just shoddy work ethic. It's not like Immonen couldn't find out what these characters look like just by doing a Google search. It wouldn't cost him more than maybe a few minutes of his time. It's this whole attitude that annoys me about Marvel now. If the artist of the series doesn't even care about preserving who the characters are supposed to be, why should anyone have any confidence in this creative team to handle these characters? Because, right now, I sure don't.

I don't know...
Grant Morrisson took a bunch of old- obscure characters for his Seven Soldiers mini, and many of those characters are virtually completely different from their original incarnations. (Guardian, anyone?)
That worked out okay.

Jesse...
They ARE completely different (As in new & original) characters in S7, so far, except for Zatanna, who really reads like the Zatanna I know. It worked out far better than OK, and I would get Morrison penned ongoings of any or all of them.
But that isn't what Ellis has done.

As for Immonen, I think the best line would be "Ya know, I'd admire his professional work ethic if he had one."
If Meltdown is his idea of a really obscure Marvel character - does he even read comics?

Guardian is a new guy in an established identity. I have no problem with that.
It's possible to take an old character, revamp them, and make them work. But part of that is explaining why they're different, so it looks like a natural character growth. Catman in Villains United is a great example of how to do it right.
Nextwave... well, isn't.

Well, Morrison's Zatanna characterization is not really how she has ever been portrayed in the past or the present, but I'm enjoying it so I don't care that much. I've heard that Morrison will portray Orion as drunken boxer, so I don't think SS can be acclaimed for its adeherance to past continuity... Because part of the job of handling a mainstream series is research. Attention to detail. Part of capturing the character properly is at least making sure the character at least looks recognizable. Otherwise, why bother with obscure characters to start with? I think it depends on the job. With NW approach Immonen certainly didn't felt the need to do any research on the subject, but I guess his disdain was annoying.

Hec...
Vertigo Zatanna is always the way Morrison portrays her, every time I see her. Are you talking the DCU version? I'd say either was valid as far as 7S is concerned.

Yes, dozens of JLA issues, present and past. The Zatanna I read there would have never conjured a boyfriend. Not that I care that much, but as I said SS it's not the best example to held in high esteem in this particular subject.

Vertigo Zatanna is clearly very different to her DCU alter ego. I certainly found nothing unusual in anything she does in 7S. I was actually pleased that I recognised her as the character I knew. So I'll agree to disagree with you on that one, Hec

I can see your guys' points, but I honestly can't get that worked up over these characters.
Maybe you guys can just hope this series fails and all this gets ret-conned.
Don't lose hope!

I have two parts of me at war, Jesse, I must admit... I want it to fail for my own reasons, but I want those of you who buy it to enjoy it... Guess I'm just schizoid ;D

Looked through the preview. So far, I don't regret my decision to leave this on the shelf.
I can also say that I officially prefer Elliot's version of Elsa Bloodstone. I like my monster hunters to not sound like Emma Frost, thank you kindly...

But Steve, every character has to act like the current incarnation of Emma "Frost" Grey, or she's not "cool".

Right now, it's more like their personalities have been switched around. Marvel right now is playing a game of Musical Personalities.
Nextwave Elsa sounds more like what Emma should sound like. Meanwhile, Emma tends to act more like Jean. Next thing you know, Jean will come back and sound like a hyperactive monster hunter. ;D

Jean: "We have to stop that werewolf from hurting anyone,"
Galactus: "All tremble, for I have come for this world,"
Iceman: "Jean, baby, darling, honey... Galactus just came to eat the planet,"
Jean: "Oh I'm sure someone powerful will take care of it, I gotta get this damn wolf,"
Iceman: "But Jean, your the Ph-"
Jean: "No! I'm Jeany the Vampire Slayer now Bobby, go tell Emma to stop it, she might as well be me now anyway,"
Iceman: "Touche..."

What he said.
Furthermore, said theme song > the Darkness.
