DIDIO NAMES 52's WRITING TEAM, COLORIST, COVER ARTIST
When we last spoke with DC’s Dan DiDio about 52* (working title), the weekly series spilling from the last issue of Infinite Crisis and filling the gap between the miniseries and the ongoing DCU series which will be set “One Year Later…”, he couldn’t say that much at all.
Oh what a difference a few weeks makes.
We caught up with DiDio again, and this time, we found him a little more forthcoming about who’s doing what, who’s drawing what, and who’ll be named the series’ honorary psycho before it’s all said and done.
As it spins out currently, Keith Giffen will be serving in an advisory capacity on the overall storyline, while providing breakdowns for the issues; Geoff Johns, Greg Rucka, Mark Waid, and Grant Morrison will shoulder the writing on the series; Alex Sinclair will step up as 52*’s primary colorist, and J.G. Jones will provide all 52 covers. The finished art teams are still being assembled.
According to DiDio, Giffen’s current role isn’t what he was originally offered. “Keith was initially brought in to help on breakdowns and bring a consistent tone to the art, since we wanted one guy doing breakdowns all through the series. But, realistically, you just can’t bring Keith into the room, and not tap into his excitement and his wealth of ideas. He became a part of the team very quickly, just because of his own energy and his inability not to be part of the team. He just loves this stuff so much.
“He’s got intimate knowledge on doing crossovers, and everybody in the room has incredible respect for him as well, and the pest part about it is that he’s a non-stop idea generator.”
Giffen’s slight change in roles was similar to Jones’, who was due to begin on some interior work shortly after signing his exclusive contract, which, DiDio joked, now lists a DC-supplied wrist brace as one of it’s terms. “We had such a great room going with the writers and Keith, and then JG came in as well. He just sat there, listening in, and was able to formulate the ideas for what will become the covers for all the books. As his plans grew, this took him off of the interior work we were planning. It’s unfortunate in that regard, but this is such an incredible challenge, and he’s one of the one or two people who would be able to rise to it, and see it for what it is, which is an exciting experience, and probably a body of work that we can hopefully collect someday as its own larger piece of work.”
DiDio did offer a few details of how Jones will be approaching the covers as well – think less “iconic,” and more “storytelling.”
“JG has a really good sense of where the characters are going, and where the story is going, and now, is looking to tell the story in the covers as well,” DiDio said. “It’s not just about iconic images, it’s something where he’s working to make it so that when you lay the 52 different covers out, you’re going to see the development of the characters through the stories.
“And yes, he is the psycho for doing all of them,” DiDio added with a laugh.
Finally – will the difference in a few weeks allow DiDio to say anything about the story of 52*?
“Yes. I can tell you with 100% certainty that there is a story,” he said with another laugh.
“Seriously, all I can say is that issue #1 starts the week after the events in the final issue of Infinite Crisis. We’ve got somewhere between 4-6 major storylines that intertwine throughout the course of the story. It’s not something that builds to a crescendo at the end, with everyone in the same room; it really is four different stories, each with their own climaxes and conclusions.
“And that’s all you get. One of the reasons we’re not talking about who the characters are, and what’s involved, is that it would tip our hand of who’s coming out of Crisis in one piece…”
