Thanks, SPS An interesting read, and I must admit I felt rather sorry for Austen. Much as I dislike his writing, I don't think there is ever any excuse to threaten or otherwise personally abuse any creator. At the end of the day, it's just comics.

I agree that's when I make threats against creators I do it in jest, but to threaten someone like with what happened to Austen is reprehensible.

I've never undestood how he could be acussed of being mysoginistic or sexist. He wrote men as bad as he wrote women.
That being said, complain all you want about bad writing, but death threats? racism? That's just beyond the line and I seriously question the sanity of whomever did those. And you know? I visited his X-Fan board before the backlash began, and he was quite friendly and nice there; and actually took moderate ciriticism in stride, unlike some other creators like Byrne or Darick Robertson who are just plain divas.

Austen seems to be really happy - so good luck to him, I say And I agree with Hec as far as the writing of characters of both sexes is concerned. Maybe a different approach and original characters will work out well for Austen? I think half his problem was always in trying to write characters with already established personalities as drastically different from how they were supposed to be. If that's no longer a problem, he would just need better plotting skills - but he is/was far from being the only writer of whom that is true. But anyways, I'll wish him luck & hope he stays happy

I have to give credit to Austen for walking away. In the end, that's probably better for everyone. Certainly better for Austen, who seems to be doing well for himself. Austen's writing leaves a great deal to be desired, I don't think there's any question there. At the same time, some of his critics did go overboard, and that just hurt their case. People really need to learn where the line is between legitimate criticism and personal attacks. There is a way to point out the flaws in someone's writing without being vicious about it. Austen does have a few good points. There were a couple of characters he did handle well, like Juggernaut and Stacy X. He even wrote a couple of issues that were readable. I'm wondering if it might be Austen could do better outside of superheroes. He seems to be enjoying himself more with the genres he's writing now. I'm happy to let Austen go his way. I don't think about him that much anymore. On the other hand, there is one thing I will miss about Austen. No writer inspired more hilarious reviews from X-Axis.

I'll admit Flywires looks interesting, and I agree Juggernaut was among his better characters.
Ya see you may consider me an Austen fan because I didn't mind his works. It's like this I buy stuff to be entertained, and as long as I'm entertained I'll buy a book, and Austen entertained me because of the Soap Opera-like drama, it's all a matter of taste I guess and I openly admit I have no taste ;D
