So, these past few weeks I've been following this storyline, God knows why, but I have. Reading the 14 chapters so far and one or two left (not sure, haven't been paying that much attention) I've found out that the back ups are generally divided as such:
There are the badly plotted, badly paced and ponderously written without really reaching anywhere back ups. In other words, they are written by Mike Carey.
There are those who are written by a writer who is actually capable of writing an effective story in 8 pages and still follow a clasical structure, along with enough characterization to keep the interest up. That writer being Christos Gage.
The last kind are the ones by Christopher Yost, which aren't as bad as the former nor as good as the later. Mostly forgettable.
So, ES has been an uneven storyline. Despite the enjoyable back ups by Gage and a competent use of continuity by all writers, the back ups are essentially a waste of time. I can't believe I'm the only one who isn't utterly SHOCKED that this storyline wouldn't reach any kind of resolution during its 3,452 back up title run. That's what the 3,293 part crossover is for.
Doesn't help that most of the titles aren't that good. X-Men is a mess, Uncanny is boring and I can't muster any interest whatsoever in reading New X-Men. The only bright spot is PAD's X-factor, which is still brilliant. I doubt X-Men or NXM, but I'm still hoping Brubaker can display the same amazing talent he does when writing elsewhere, so at least UXM and X-Factor are enjoyable during Messiah Complex.
Any thoughts?
