Rather than do a comics thread by week, I figured to start a thread just listing our latest acquisitions. For today, I went to the shop and picked up the following... Runaways #28 Suicide Squad #2 Green Lantern #24 Superman #668 Punisher #51 X-Factor #24 Batman #669 I also picked up the JLA/Hitman series and Flash from the previous weeks, because my shop moved not too long ago. All in all, not too bad.

Okay, I went back and picked up some new books... She-Hulk #22: Surprisingly good start. I decided to try this because PAD is one of the very few Marvel writers I still trust. I like where this is going. The "Stephanie Plum" approach works, the villains were well chosen, and there are some really great twists along the way. I'll keep on and see where this goes for now. Death of the New Gods #1-2: Starlin on a cosmic story, featuring Darkseid? I'm there. I'm not too attached to most of the New Gods, though I've read most of Kirby's Fourth World. That's a bad thing, because there's no real emotional impact to most of these deaths. That having been said, Starlin tells a decent story, though I see a lot of his familiar techniques creeping in. Still, it's a Starlin cosmic story, and on that basis it's perfectly solid. Green Lantern Corps: A mediocre Sinestro War tie-in, but nothing too bad. I do like Sodam Yat, though. Superman #669: Interesting issue. Great characterization from Busiek, and that makes up for an otherwise dull setup. Karsta's quite intriguing, even though I can't say I care for the villains or the plot in itself. Still, there's potential here. Brave & The Bold #7: Good issue. Wonder Woman is as boring as ever, but Mark Waid turns that to his advantage by setting her as a foil against Power Girl. The tension between the two is well played, and I like the concept of the Lost Library. I'm liking this. Batman #670: I really want to love this story, as Ra's al Ghul is one of my favorite villains, but I'm not really there yet. Still, I did like Batman taking on the trio of loser villains, Tony Daniel is off to a good start as the new artist, and the family dynamics among the villains works for me. Solid start overall. The Boys #11: Overall, not bad so far, though Ennis has done better. Ennis is back to doing his creepy style of humor again, which is fair enough, and the Russian characters are quite interesting. Decent start. Flash #233: Solid resolution to the arc, and I love the West family dynamics here. I found the standout piece was the Jay Garrick backup, though... Doug Braithwaite has really improved his game since the last time I read his work. JSA #10: Doesn't quite meet the hype, but I liked it. Kingdom Come Superman is a good fit for this cast, and I'd like to see him stick around a while. I'm a bit torn on the use of Alex Ross painted art for the Earth-22 sequences, though... sure, Ross's art is pretty to look at, but it makes Eaglesham's interiors look a lot worse than they actually are. All in all, a pretty decent stack for me.

Bringing this back, cause I can... ;D Astro City: Beautie: I really liked this. Beautie was a neat concept (a superpowered android in the shape of a Barbie doll), but in previous stories she was always a background character. Busiek really fleshes her out here (so to speak), and I find Beautie far more complex after reading this. I don't think she could sustain a series, but I would like to see more of her in future Astro City tales. Death of the New Gods #6 Robin #171 Batman & The Outsiders #4 Brave & The Bold #10 Dan Dare #1-3: Very good series so far... to be honest, I'm enjoying this more than anything else Ennis is writing presently. I'd love to see Ennis do a good long run on this character.
