Mine are: Role Playing Game - Planescape: Torment. This one is not even a contest, for me. Real Time Strategy - I love all the Total War games, but I am torn between Rome (Best engine but can bog down) and Medieval... Overall, I think much as I love Rome right now, Medieval will win out for me in the end. Though I wish they would redo Medieval using the Rome engine... Third Person Shooter - Tomb Raider: The Last Revelation. If you only play one TR game in your life, make sure it's this one God Game - Dungeon Keeper (The original. Not 2. NEVER 2) First Person Shooter - don't play them Pirate Game - Sea Dogs. City Builder - don't play them

Role Playing Game: Fallout 2. Best game ever. I also played Bards Tale II for probably an accumulated 3 years. It's from the early nineties, but I loved it.
Real Time Strategy: I think I'll have to go with Red Alert 2. The improvements over the original Command and Conquer classic make it more enjoyable.
Third Person Shooter: Never really played any
First Person shooter: Half Life 2. This is no contest the best, and I haven't even played it that much yet.
Pirate Game: Treasure Island (this game is from the eighties, but I still love it).
City builder: I dabbled with the original Sim City, and it was pretty darn fun.
Turn based strategy: Heroes of Might and Magic 2. Much more enjoyable than the sequel, in my opinion.
I'll also add a new genre, the all-text games (like those old infocom games). I had a lot of fun with Zork 1 and Wishbringer, but I didn't play nearly as many as I would have liked.

Role Playing Game: Probably Torment for me as well. Although I have fond memories of BG2, Star Ocean 2, and Xenogears. Real Time Strategy: Mechcommander. Not really a RTS sort of player, but that one comes close enough to count. Third Person Shooter: Tomb Raider 2, I guess. Not a shooter fan, mind you. God Game: The Sims. Though it's always possible I may change my mind if I ever play Sims 2. First Person Shooter: Mechwarrior 2, probably. I am not a big fan of FPS games as a rule, but I don't mind trashing the odd enemy mech. Pirate Game: Does killing Saemon Havarian over and over in the Baldur's Gate 2 series count? ;D City Builder: Closest thing I can think of is the Civilization series, so I'll go with that.

I don't play very many games, but here is my go at the list. Plus notes about ones others have added. Role Playing Game - It has got to be Planescape Torment. I loved that game and I have not found one to equal it for me. Real Time Strategy - don't play them Third Person Shooter - Oh, this is scary. I'm matching Elliot again. I have to go with Tomb Raider: The Last Revelation. God Game - don't play them First Person Shooter - Not much into these, but I did enjoy the Star Wars Jedi Knight series. I haven't played Jedi Academy yet though. Pirate Game- don't play City Builder - don't play added I got hold of some of the old Zork games from a friend when I was in college and I really enjoyed those. I also played some of the old Ultima games starting with 4 that a friend had and I really enjoyed those. They were really good to me. (Serpent Isle especially) Someone mentioned turned based I played some of the Might and Magic series and enjoyed them. Can't remember which I liked the best though. Shan

Going to only list the genres I play:
RPG- Diablo 2 (no surprise)
RTS- Tie between Starcraft and Age of Empires 2
Third Person- American Mcgee's Alice
God Game- The Sims if it counts. I love seeing the Sims light themselves on fire, have children on the front lawn, then get them taken away after you lock them in an unescapable room with a window in it because they're too stupid to escape, same with the pool. Yes I am a malevolent god.
FPS- HL series
city builder- Sim City Classic
Favorite obscure game- an old adventure game called the adventures of Maddog Williams plus alot of early shareware games like Crystal Caves, and the Commander Keen series were pretty good.

Good topic.
RPG: Final Fantasy 7, by a hair over 6. I love all the FF's and I love RPG's in general thou.
Those other games I don't really play, unless you consider the Metroid Prime games, FPS. Some do and some don't.
As for City Builder, does it get any better than Sim City? I actually bought two different games like this the other day, but haven't played enough to have an opinion.
I could add a lot of categories but I don't wanna go down that road right now...

Well, I have a lot of RPG games, but haven't played many of them. My favorite would have to be Neverwinter Nights, only because I actually finished it!
I actually like Heroes of Might & Magic 3 more than 2. 4 could have been good except they messed up on the battle system. But the ability to split your troops off into their own unit was very very cool. Also cool was getting new creatures every day rather than once a week. And having your hero as part of the battle with equipable armor and weapons was also very cool.
I play more PS2 games. When I'm on my computer, I'm almost always working... or posting at message boards. ;D

HMM 3 suffered from a very poor game that came with the system. The Heroes Chronicles series which use the HMM3 engine are all rather good, IMO In terms of the original game releases, I think 4 sneaks it over 2, just, with 3 bringing up the rear most definitely.

Haven't played H4 that much but H3 is definetly better than number 2 and 4 imo. I have Heroes Complete and if you haven't tried either the AB or SOD expansions then I'll suggest you give it a look. AB adds a new castle, several new creatures (neutrals and town), new heroes, maps and campagns. SOD doesn't add that much but theres new maps, campaigns and some awfully cool combo artifacts. Necro, especially, will relish when they piece together Cloak of the undead King. I haven't tried the chronicles expansions but heard some good stuff about it. Lastly I'll add that there's a Russian add on for heroes 3 which acts like heroes 3.5. Supposedly it's pretty good and offers major new gameplay options,. Haven't downloaded it myself, but it's free and afaik won't screw up your original version. Take a look. www.strategyplanet.com/homm/wog/

Since my preferred genre of choice are RPGs, I'll give my top 5 on that.
Role Playing Game
1. Baldur's Gate: Shadows of Amn/Throne of Bhaal 2. Baldur's gate 3. Final Fantasy 6 4. Suikoden 1, 3 5. Ultima V (this is kind of nostalgic on my part)
Keep in mind I have Planescape: Torment but have only played it for 30 minutes. I'll come back to it again sometimes.
Real Time Strategy -
Don't think I've played any, but I like Ogrebattle as an turn based strategy game.
Third Person Shooter -
Kingdom Hearts might count on this one, but it's not really a "shooter."
God Game
I have no idea what a "God Game" even is.
First Person Shooter
Probably Doom, what I've played of it. And Doom 3 as well, but I've only played that very briefly (on a friend's console.)
Pirate Game
Haven't encountered one.
City Builder
Simcity I suppose.

I think we should include consoles on this since many other people have also. So here it goes:
Platformer: Super Mario 64
Role Playing Game: Star Ocean: the 2nd story. Until my dying day I will say FF7 doesn't deserve the god-like praise it gets.
RTS: For the most part RTS blows on consoles, and we have yet to have Warcraft on DS or GBA so until one comes out this is ignored.
Third Person Adventure: Legend of Zelda: OoT this game remains the best until the new Zelda game comes out but even then will it knock the king off it's throne?
Third Person Shooter: RE4 or the GTA games. RE4 if you want better story, and graphics. GTA series for just pure fun.
God games: only good for PC
FPS: Getting better with every new generation. Right now I'd say Metroid Prime though it's more of a first person adventure.
Pirate, and city builder: rarely see them for consoles
I'd also like to add a couple of console specific genres:
Sport: Tony Hawk's Underground. With unlockables such as Iron Man, and Gene Simmons and huge levels what's not to love?
Fighter: Soul Calibur 2 for GC. Just using Link to kick everybody's hiney is so fun. Beats out Super Smash Brothers by a hair for that fact alone mainly because nobody believes for a second Pikachu can defeat Mewtwo in under a minute.
Underrated game: Gotta go with the pokemon series here. This IMO is the only game for the Game Boy. Never have as much fun with others except for Mario and Luigi superstar saga.

Third Person Shooter - not a shooter but Prince of persia (sp?) Warrior within That's more of a platformer/action hybrid game.
