This flick, I thought, was pretty good. Better than expected, actually.

I didn't see this one when it first came out. In fact I knew nothing about it or the series until Christmas. Some friends game them ( the boxset of the series and the movie Serenity ) to us for Christmas. I loved both of them. Firefly was a great series and I loved every one of the episodes (some a little better than others, but still all of them ) The characters really seemed to fit their parts and I loved the way they played off each other. Plus there was just enough humor in it to make it fun. I just wish the series had gone on longer. I loved the movie Serenity. It gave me some answers to some things I had wondered about. I am glad they told more about Simon and River. I just wish there had been more story about the Shepherd. I loved the mystery behind his character and wanted to know more about him. He had to have been someone very important at one time because of the way he was treated in the hospital after they saw his ID card. Both the series and the movie left me wanting more. Shan

Well Dom, I also don't need to own it, I've seen it muliple times, and have it more or less memorized. Its a very good movie, but I don't feel the massive urge to buy it, or watch it again.
ANd I know there won't be a sequel in all likelyhood, they want Box Office, that is the key thing they want, something that will end the current BO trend.

I don't expect to see a sequel either. In fact I will be shocked if there is one. I would still love to see one though. Shan

It's not looking terribly likely, no. Still... anything's possible. I'm tempted to get that Firefly boxed set. I still haven't watched the whole series yet. Maybe I will, one of these days... As for Book... I am pretty sure he was a prominent guy in the Alliance. Probably he turned to God as a result of something he was involved with. I suspect Joss wanted to reveal his backstory, but for whatever reason it didn't happen. Whether Serenity goes on or not, it was still a fun ride while it lasted.

I was thinking the same. From the treatment the hospital gave him, I think he had to have been someone very important in the Alliance at one time. Chris and I wondered if he could have possibly been involved with what happened to River in some way. I don't mean directly, but maybe someone high up in the program or maybe even someone on the creation end. I think or at least hope that his story would have been revealed if the series had continued. He was a very fascinating character. Shan

For those of you who watch alot of TV or TV series similiar to Firefly, any ideas why the series did not make it? Did it even make it a full season? I know the boxset contained at least 3 episodes that were marked as not aired. Shan

The series was cancelled for many reasons among them:
-A pilot that cost 8 million dollars to make
-A Friday night time slot
-Showing an episode every other week, and showing the episodes out of order
-It was too different for most audiences.

Shan... It's possible that Book may have been involved in River's past. It'd explain a lot of things about him. I have the Firefly boxed set on order, so maybe I'll have some thoughts about it once I finish the full series. All the characters were interesting in some way. It's a great ensemble. Still, as much as I regret that Book had to be written out, I do understand why he was killed off. I'm sure if Firefly had gone on, we'd have gotten the answers. Whedon isn't the sort of writer to leave too many loose ends hanging. Firefly's cancellation... Fox, as I understand it, wasn't strongly behind it. They wanted more numbers than they got from it. (Even Buffy numbers wouldn't have been enough for a network like Fox, IIRC.) And Fox had this series they wanted to support... some show called Fastlane that went down in flames even faster than Firefly did. I'm hoping that maybe the series can continue, maybe on cable or something. The show seems to be doing okay in reruns on Sci-Fi. I'm sure Whedon is exploring his options; he's too passionate about this universe to let it go easily.

Ironically Fastlane also ended up with reruns on another network, and seems to be doing well also. Fastlane is on G4 now.

Steve, Chris and I would be interested in any thoughts you have after you've watched the entire series. Do you think the reruns are doing better than the actual show did? It would be cool if Whedon could find some way to continue the story. And thanks Steve, you too SP, for the reasons why Firefly was canceled. Shan

No problem, Shan. I'll be sure to post some thoughts once my boxed set arrives. Not certain regarding actual numbers, offhand. The best answer I can give you is... depends on how you look at it. I think it's doing better on Sci-Fi in the sense that it's a cable network that doesn't have as high a demand in terms of numbers. Also, Firefly is definitely aimed at its target audience over on Sci-Fi. Clearly, Sci-Fi is doing much more to support it, including regular marathons, advertising, and so on. On the other hand, Fox clearly gives you more visibility and a greater potential audience. So there's that drawback. On balance, though, I'd say it's probably better off at Sci-Fi at this point.

Just to let you know, Shan, I finally just got my Firefly boxed set in the mail today. I'm rather busy these days, so I may not get around to it until this weekend. But I'll offer you some commentary on the series when the opportunity permits.

I finally finished my boxed set. So as promised, my thoughts on Firefly...
I look at Firefly now, and I begin to understand this series. Not just what it was creatively or why it worked, but why it failed. There is definitely good storytelling here, and it gradually gets better as it goes along. Overall, this is probably Whedon's best first season on a show. Had Firefly lasted a few more seasons, we might have gotten something as strong as Buffy Season 2 or Angel Season 5. Serenity seems to indicate a strong long-term direction.
However... I think Firefly was rather brutally sabotaged by the network. Not just by the way it was cancelled, but in bad decisions that Fox made early on. Pulling the original two-hour pilot especially was a dreadfully bad move, because that's the story that introduces who everyone is and what the series is all about. The show ended up trying to play catch-up after that, and I feel it hurt the momentum of those early episodes somewhat. As it is, Firefly managed as well as it could in a difficult situation.
Firefly really gives the sense of an unfinished story with a lot of promise. There are a lot of interesting questions that Firefly doesn't really get the chance to answer. I'm glad that Serenity does resolve some of these, but there are a few other things that get me.
Book is one of the big questions, and there are little hints dropped all over. We have a preacher who can beat up an Alliance fed, gets sweet medical treatment from the Alliance by flashing his ID, and knows way more than he should about crime, weapons, and Alliance tactics. I wouldn't be surprised if he used to work in Alliance black ops, honestly.
Inara's past is another point they've hinted at and not resolved. "Out Of Gas" indicates that Inara must be fairly desperate to work aboard Serenity and not some luxury cruiser. "Heart Of Gold" establishes that Inara was on the path to being a high priestess in the Companions' Guild, but left suddenly for reasons unrevealed. I'd like to know what would be bad enough that Inara would leave a promising career to join Mal's crew.
There are some other things, but I'll leave it at that for now. I really hope that this story continues on in some format. Maybe then some of these things will finally be put to rest.

Thanks Steve. Your thoughts are basically the same ones that Chris and I had especially about Shepherd Book and Inara. I guess it is left up to our imaginations to decide what happened in their pasts. It would be nice if the story could be continued, but I'm not holding my breath. Shan
