I was never a huge Firefly fan, but I'm interested enough to see the film. Whedon definitely has a lot of passion about this project, and that's always a good sign.

Serenity is finally out over here. I plan on seeing this later today. Most likely, I'll post some comments on the film when I get back. I saw some Firefly episodes earlier in the week, and they were solid stuff. I'm hoping for more from the film. Looks like I'll be finding out soon enough.

Its a loss on my part in your opinion dom?! My word! And here when I thought you said "Its a loss on your part," I thought you meant in Venom's opinion, or perhaps Tracerbullet's! My word, speaking for your own opinion, such a new, fantastic concept! Sorry for the sarcasm, I couldn't resist

Folks, I suggest settling down. It's all about opinion in the end. * Anyway, as promised, my thoughts on Serenity... As I've said before, I wasn't a great fan of Firefly. The episodes I've seen were solid enough, about what you'd expect from a first-season Whedon show. But while I liked it okay, I was never that attached to the characters or the concept the first time around. That's changed with this film. Serenity persuaded me to give the series a second chance. Primarily because of Joss Whedon's level of commitment to the project. If he believed in Serenity enough to put in all that effort, then maybe, just perhaps, there was something he saw that I somehow missed. There was. Serenity is a far sight above any of the Firefly episodes I've seen. I'd say Serenity is closer to Whedon's better TV work in quality. If Firefly had continued, I suspect we would have gotten some good stuff in the following seasons. The film quickly lays the groundwork for the cast and the series, then proceeds to rip it under the audience's feet. Big things happen in this movie. This is not like, say, your average comic, which often promises to change things forever and delivers a half-hearted rehash. Characters grow, relationships change, and there's a real sense of danger throughout. There are heavy stakes to the battle for the future of the Serenity universe. Worlds live, people die, and often in unexpected ways. The movie shows that there's a heavy cost to freedom without anyone ever once saying it in cliche fashion. One of the more interesting points to the film to me is that the battle isn't a clear-cut argument. The Operative doesn't come across as simply a villain, but a well defined character with a valid point of view. Mal Reynolds, likewise, doesn't come across as a stainless hero, but as a human being facing a hard choice. The ideological conflict is fairly handled, with each side having a legitimate point of view. Who's right or wrong is left up to the audience. This is the kind of thing we don't see enough of. Overall, Serenity is rather a good film. Certainly one of the better space opera films I've seen in recent years. I fully expect this is going to grace my DVD collection.

I don't think I could have thought of a nicer way to say 'I think your wrong'. deal with it.

At this point, it all comes down to DVD sales. If the DVD does well (as the Firefly boxed set did), Serenity may still in the long run make enough money to warrant a sequel. I'm not optimistic, but I'd love for it to happen. Still, I think there's a good chance it'll at least break even when DVD sales figure in. If not, it's still a good SF film that has strong critical acclaim and a devoted following. Considering this movie had no huge stars, a complicated premise, and not exactly the best promotional campaign ever, it could have been a lot worse. The DVD is out today, by the way. It's got some good stuff, too. Pick it up.
