Apparently the new Doctor will be announced at 5:35 PM on Saturday. Correct me if I'm wrong but that will be 12:35 our time. Keep us updated our British users!

Coolness. Or possible coolness... We got Stephen Moffat leading the writers, but now we need an ultra-great Doctor...
As Rhiian says, Tennant will be a very hard act to follow.

The jury is out on this guy for me so far. Mainly because I've never heard of this guy. But then, I didn't know anything about David Tennant when he was cast either, so who knows?
Fortunately, the character and concept of the Doctor are inherently flexible. The Eleventh Doctor can be as different as the story needs and still work. That said, Smith's got an incredible challenge ahead of him in following Tennant, so I don't envy anyone who has to take up that job.
As is, I'm firmly in "wait and see" mode right now. I don't think I'll have a good sense of what Smith brings (or doesn't) to the role until after he debuts.

He looks kind of... Emo... he looks rather indie to me. but still and with him being unknown i think it's great because it's his big break and we won't be able to judge him on any of his other roles [you know like if an actor plays a baddie and they're all snide n stuff and u actually proper hate them? we wont be able to be like OMG ITS HIM HATE HIM BOO]. by the looks of the clips they showed of him in Party Animals and Ruby in the Smoke, he's got a jolly demeiner [demeaner? idk] attitude. so i think he'll play the role well but maybe not as well as david tennant who's a bit of a chamealon, morphing his face every five seconds. altho :'[ sob no david tennant to oggle at on a saturday night anymore. filming for new series starts in the summer so hopefully behind the scenes photos will be released like wen kylie appeared. but oh who will be his sidekick ;D

Jenny or Sally Sparrow I'm hoping...
And I'll certainly give the guy a chance, Rhiian. Especially with Moffat running the show, now.
There's always a certain of amount of 'can he do it?' with a new Doctor - especially when the last one was really good.

There's more than a few good potential Companions floating around, and it may be we could see any of them through Moffat's run. With Moffat writing, I expect it should be someone who can serve as an effective foil to Smith's Doctor. Jenny would be very interesting, and I quite suspect we will see her again at some point. She was spared by Moffat for a reason, I'm sure. Sally Sparrow would also be a great "traditional" Companion if Moffat wanted to bring her back. Which also wouldn't surprise me, as Moffat created her. And then, of course, I find it highly likely that we'll see a young River Song at some point. Would be very interesting to see the Eleventh Doctor deal with the fact that he knows his time with her is going to be brief... Should be interesting to see how it all plays out.

Planet of the Dead is really good. Lady Christina is AWESOME! More of her would be great, definitely!
Chalk up another for the 'great potential companion' list!

Hmm... they seem to be going for "ordinary girl as Companion" again. Which is probably a good way to go, considering that they're starting with a new Doctor. Beyond that, though, there's more I'd like to know about her that this press release doesn't answer. Well, mainly two questions. Can she act, and does her character have a personality? ;D Too soon to know in either case right now, especially since I have no idea who this Karen Gillan is. But we'll know in due course.

Weeelll, personality would depend on the writer, really... That Moffat dude... He seems kinda OK, so far

Yeah, true... but we have no idea what he's come up with, yet. I trust Moffat so far, but you never know.
