If there is any objective standard at all when it comes to judging films (and there is), it's safe to say that Lord of the Rings are much better movies than Star Wars.
Don't look at me. Science says you're wrong if you think Star Wars is better.

Yes at last.....Go Jang....Someone else sees my point.... No to say LotR's doesn't have its theological undercurrents, of course it does, its just that you have to award to George Lucas (yes another one to put with his shelf full) for what he was able to portray given what he had at the time.......

You can say what you want but George Lucas didn't win an oscar and Peter Jackson did ;D

Yeeesss... I'd bet the Academy almost died in awarding it, too. And only one out of the three they should have gotten.
I suspect they realised if they did NOT give it to RotK their already corroded credibility would have utterly vanished.
Should have gotten some best actor Oscars, too...

anyways, both aren't exactly original. LOTR is an adaptation while SW is loosely based on Akira Kurosawa's Hidden Fortress.
film-wise, i think special effects should be factored in as it's part of what we call movies or films. both are/were ground-breaking when they were released in theatres. both have very impressive sound effects. in terms of music, i tend to lean a bit more on Howard Shore as his works in all the LOTR soundtracks are consistently good while John Williams make very memorable tracks scattered throughout the SW saga soundtracks.

Way I see it LoTR has a better cast Period. I mean sure the original Star Wars movies have Alec Guiness, and James Earl Jones plus a few no-name actors (Mark Hammill, Carrie Fisher are no names despite being reverred by geeks everywhere) but LoTR has Elijah Wood, Ian Mckellen, Liv Tyler, Hugo Weaving, Viggo Mortensen, need I go on?
Plus LoTR has the better director in Peter Jackson. Now don't get me wrong but when I think Lucas I don't think Master Director George Lucas. I instead think Master Creator George Lucas. Jackson can get emotions out of actors Lucas fails to see the acting and only the imagery. Jackson melds both equally. It goes to show that the best Star Wars movie wasn't directed by Lucas but it was directed by Laurence Kasadan a director who previously directed dramas.
But in terms of worlds created Star Wars has Lord of the Rings beat on all levels. Just look at the movies every world has its own unique creatures and design. Lord of the Rings may be beautiful but the world looks and feels like every other fantasy realm.
That's why I like Star Wars more. It absorbs me. LoTR tries to but the world isn't engaging to me.

LotR looks and feels like every other fantasy realm because every other fantasy realm is based on it...
As far as the acting in LotR is concerned, I'd dispute Weaving - he was quite poor - but I'd add Sean Astin, John Rhys Davies and Orlando Bloom, who were all superb. For that matter, Sean Bean was pretty darn good.
Star Wars - yeah, 'acting' ain't really in it as such ;D

I don't agree wit Elliot about Weaving, but that is imo. What I feel about the actors of LOTR, is that there is not one person out of place there, every role they had to play was written all over them.

I think there are a few who definitely could have been better. Miranda Otto is deeply unconvincing as Eowyn, and Pippin having a broad Scottish accent when the rest of the Hobbits all had English accents was odd. Galadriel and Elrond were also miscast, but not dreadfully.
On the good side, though, the best casting decisions were truly great. And Gollum is an absolute masterpiece.

Man, this is tough. Many of us know that I love Lord of the Rings. And many of us know that I love Star Wars. Star Wars had a bigger and more important impact on my life and imagination (as movies go). So if this were a a question of favorites, thats the trilogy that would take the win. Lord of the Rings was more important as books for me. But thats not the question, is it? The question is: which is better? Well, thats too damn hard a decision for a person like myself (one of the most indecisive fools you'll ever meet ). I'll leave it to you guys to discuss. ;D Killerzzz
