This time we're going to change it up slightly and settle what film trilogy is better. So here it goes which trilogy is better?
Star Wars (original for the purposes of this battle ignore the prequels) OR The Lord of the Rings

The Lord of the Rings has better acting.

I'd have to go LotR on this one, much as I like Star Wars. Both trilogies have their flaws and their weaker films. (Two Towers and Return of the Jedi, respectively.) For me, though, LotR overall holds up better on a story level even though it's much more complex. LotR's only real flaw to me is Two Towers, particularly the pointless Arwen scenes and the Osgiliath sequence toward the end, and even then those aren't things that completely ruin the film. On the other hand, I can't watch Return of the Jedi anymore without skipping all the Ewok scenes, which is rather bad considering the whole plot hinges on Han's squad lowering the shield generator. That said, I'm not sure it's entirely fair to compare the two, given the difference in craft, technology and special effects at the times they were made. I'd be more inclined to compare LotR with something like Pirates of the Caribbean, but that's me.

Definitly LOTR, no doubt about that. Better acting (more good looking humans and elves), better special effects, better story and all in all, it's just a better theme ;D and Star Wars has no elves! ;D LOTR rulezzzz!!

LoTR easily, IMO. Both are absolutely state of the art for their time in terms of effects, and both have great epic stories, but while SW is a fairytale given a modern twist, LoTR is myth - and the sense of scale is actually greater. Acting and dialogue are both far better in LoTR, and there are no stupid teddy bears to wreck what should have been a fantastic climax.
I think that last point may well be the most important, in fact: no stupid teddy bears!

I'd have to go with Star Wars on this one. On the simple fact that the Star Wars movies don't put me to sleep. Yes I have to skip some of Jedi (though only in the special edition) but still at least someone doesn't have to wake me up when it's over.

It's time to agree with SPS. Starwars wins this one for me.....Not because its a better trilolgy....Its not....but because of the visonary behind it. you have to give the credit to George Lucas for that one. he had an idea, took a chance and the world has never been the same.......
No matter how good LofR is (and it is brillent) it is still only an adaptation and therefore doesn't cut it.
Sorry guys

No way, Conrad, we'll NEVER forgiveing you for disagreeing with us! LotR, because it's better. But then I think SW is overrated (sure, great special effects for it's time, but the third film drops in quality too much). Übereil

In terms of overall impact on the world of cinema - sure, SW takes it. It has had a similar impact to the one LoTR had on the world of novels.
But in terms of pure enjoyability - it's still LoTR.
Then there's the director's cut versions: three words: Greedo shoots first. Lucas had the vision once, but he lost it SO much...

EK: Did i say anything about the SE's? Nope i think i didn't.....lets not even dicuss those
Ube: You have not gotten an arguement from me, I said LotR is better done....but i can't help thinking that if the roles were reversed people would be voting the other way.

To fully appreciate the 2 trilogies you have to ignore the special effects, because they were both impressive in their time so they both win a tie there.
You have to look at the story. Both have a basic theme of good verus evil.
With LOTR you see this battle affecting many different people, it is epic and far reaching. You also learn alot about the lands of middle earth (new zealand) and what part they play in the overall story. With a main story of how it affects a small group and their growth into their eventual parts.
With SW you see this battle affecting on a small core group of adventurers. It is a more personal and focused battle. There is the growth of Luke into a Jedi. Also the redemption of Anakin Skywalker.
So my vote goes to the theme. It is good to see a fight against adversity on the personal and epic level.

Star Wars isn't real and LOTR is or was ;D Haha! There are elves in the world, I'm the living proof of that, but have you ever seen a dude with a respiration mask like Dart Vader before? ;D ;D ;D
btw Troy, it's nice to see you again here!
