I've been listening to Launch of late and I must have heard two covers of classic songs. First a horrendous cover of "Under Pressure" by the Used and then an equally horrendous cover of "Kiss Me" by New Found Glory. Why the heck are punk bands doing so many bad covers? Has this generation run out of good ideas? I mean not every cover song can be as good as the original (Bowling For Soup's cover of "I Ran") or vastly superior (Any cover Disturbed does, and the Atari's "Boys of Summer") but at least give respect to the song you're covering. Don't just cover it to make a couple bucks. Take it I do realize that covers aren't that big of music but hearing the bad ones make me want to pour acid into my ears so I'll never have to hear them again.
I'll point out more covers both good and bad when I have more time.

I think V's pretty much covered it, honestly. It's a lot easier to turn out a cover than it is to create an original song and you get immediate recognition where you have to promote a new song.
If what you got ain't that great, covers look very tempting...

My favourite covers are:
Baby (I don't care) - Jennifer Ellison covering Transvision Vamp.
Dancing in the street - Bowie & Jagger blow away the original.
Johnny B Goode - cover by Judas Priest is great.
Heaven (Candlelight version) - cover of the Bryan Adams classic by Do. She did a dance version too, which is also good.
Heart Of Glass - Skye Sweetnam covers Blondie with amazing skill. This one is almost as good as the original.

I love me "Come Together" by Aerosmith... blows the Beatles away!
They also do a good job on "Love Me Two Times"
As for the Chili Peppers... can you say "Roller Coaster of Love"? I thought so!
The Goo Goo Dolls do "Give A Little Bit" well.
That all I have off the top of my head, more later...

I forgot about Roller Coaster! That's a kickass cover right there.

Knock On Wood by Rachel Stevens is very good. She did it for some kind of special, so it might be hard to find, but is worth your time tracking down.

A really bad cover I heard was the Foo Fighters covering Oasis' 'Lyla'. The vocals just really ruin the song. (I couldn't find it on youtube, it was part of a Radio 1 special album thing).

I guess the ideas run out. There isn't much originality anymore.
But on the other hand I onvce read the saying that "copying is another way of acknowledging good work", so to say.
In very, very rare cases, the cover is even better than the original.
Like the piano-only version of "Mad World" which was originally made by Tears for Fear I think.
