Is anybody else following this year's main event? It's unbelievable how much it has grown. In 2003, the field was 839 players. This year, 8,773 players!!!! At $10,000 a piece to enter!! First place will pay $12,000,000, and the top 12 players are all guaranteed to become millionaires.
And for the first time, they are going to broadcast the final table live on pay-per-view. Call me a geek, but I think I'm gonna order it.

I wouldn't PAY to watch it, but when ESPN shows it I generally watch a little bit of it. I'm not HUGE into watching poker, I like to play it however.

I have one question. How is this consider enough of a sport to be on ESPN? Not that I am complaining. I enjoy watching people lose large sums of money and laughing at them, I just thought getting sweaty is what help classifide things from sports from games... Anyways! I posted on the sport board so now my brain is safe.

It's more of a "sport" than the spelling bee.
Half of what ESPN shows isn't a sport... it's slowly going down the path of MTV sadly.
Oh, and Misty, your brain is only safe if you visit often. This is easily the slowest board at the Cascade, and I'm trying to change that... with little success so far.

I've got the live feed streaming right now on ESPN Pay-Per-View...........it's worth it so far, by the time ESPN televises it all the drama is gone. Even if you have been able to avoid finding out who won before they televise it, when the broadcast runs from 7 to 8, and it's 7:58 and down to two players and one guy has 2/3 of the chips, you know who is going to win. At least live, it's impossible to know when it will end until it actually does.
Right now the players are on dinner break....................spoiler alert!....................................
and Jaime Gold is the chip leader with over 51 MILLION in chips!!!! There are only about 87 million chips in play, so he is definitely in command. I'm pulling for the only pro left, Allen Cunningham.
Misty; I'll give you that poker is definitely not a physical sport. But it does take mental stamina, and even to some extent physical stamina, playing for 12 hours a day for a week or more in a row. The major reason ESPN televises it, though, is it's because it's what the public wants. If poker had not exploded in popularity, ESPN would not be televising it. It's all about the profits.
And in a tournament, no one is really losing any money, except in an abstract sense. All the players pay $10,000 to play, but when you get down to the end, say the guy who finished sixth this year, he lost 10 million chips on his final hand, but he still won a little less than 3 million dollars for finishing sixth. He only "lost" the possibility of winning 12 million for first.

Metal is right about that, ESPN only continues to show it because people watch. If they stopped watching, they'd stop showing it. That said, I wish they would show some of the "real" sports that they play at night. For example, did you know ESPN shows LaCrosse at night? Like REALLLLLLLLLLL late. Maybe I just pull for it because I used to play it, a lot of people don't even know what it is, but I bet a lot of people would like it if they got to see it more than once a year.

I don't think you get much LaCrosse though since the only coverage they seem to get is from that college rape thing that was going on awhile ago. I think the negative coverage the players got tainted the sport in some people eyes that don't know much about it.
Anyways, I like poker all kinds inculding strip just don't think it sound be shown on a sport channel since it is a game not a sport, but like it been stated ESPN has become like MTV and lost sight what they are suspose to be about.

Venom there is a reason why they don't show lacrosse until REALLLLLL late at night. It ranks right up there in popularity, second only to badminton. I'm being sarcastic I know, but where you might put your freak on for football. I would shell out real moola to see a hockey game. And Misty I don't think that those rape charges affected the sport of Lacrosse that much. They couldn't find enough drunk people at the time is all. Damn! I'm being sarcastic again. ;D You have me really confused now, you have the hots for a football player and now this. Have you ever considered professional help? ;D
