Now, I am by no means a tennis fan, I'm a casual observer at best. That said, for those of you who don't know, the US Open (going on NOW) will be the last professional tournament for him. Agassi is one of the greatest tennis players to ever live and I really hope he gets a chance to win this tournament. He hasn't won anything major in a few years, but it would be nice to see him get to go out on top. So for as long as Agassi has one more match left in his brilliant career please post your favorite Andre Agassi stories, memories, pictures, etc! Of course you can post about him anytime... but I figured now was as good a time as any.

Andre Agassi is one of the greatest players in the history of tennis. I would like very much for him to win the Open before he retires. I don't know if he will... Federer has just been too dominant of late. But I'd like to see it. He had a good match against Pavel tonight. His game was off in the third set, but he managed to overcome two break points to win it and finish the fourth. A pretty decent showing from him, all in all. Favorite moments... too many to list. His legendary battles with Sampras come to mind. He's also had some great matches against Federer. But I'm also really fond of the 5-set nailbiter against James Blake last year or so (which Agassi won in a tiebreak, IIRC). That was some really outstanding tennis.

Going to sticky this thread for as long as Agassi remains alive. Hope this thread is a hit as one of the great athletes of our time has his last hurrah. Maybe this weekend I'll take the time to present his story. It's amazing how he was on top, fell, and rose again. Here is a good article that sums up his career nice and sweet for those interested. sports.espn.go.com/espn/classic/bio/news/story?page=Agassi_Andre

Way to go Andre last night!
With the end of his career staring him in the face, Agassi played the 5th set like a man who knew, "this really could be my last match." To go up the way he did, and then withstand a huge charge by his opponent (I can't spell his name) and then in the end the 21 year old cramped up while Agassi was able to keep going.
This was perhaps the most entertaining tennis match I've ever seen. Only 5 more matches to go for Agassi! You can do it!
Everyone be sure to tune in on Saturday for Andre's next match. Any match could be his last, so don't miss your last chance to see one of the greatest athlete's of our generation make one last run for glory!

And it's all over for Agassi. He had a good match, if he had just caught a couple of breaks, it might have turned out differently. As it turns out, age and injury finally caught up to him and he fell today. That's too bad, I'll miss Agassi, he was the only player I was even half way interested in. When some news stories go up about him, I'll be sure to link them for those interested. EDIT: I should also mention, doesn't it seem like the truly great players careers fly by so fast? No matter the sport it seems like it was just yesterday they were at the top of their career, completely dominating their sport, and then you're watching a shadow of their former selves trying to make one last (or maybe one final) run at glory. We'll miss you Andre.

Sigh. This really sucks. It's really a shame to watch a great player fall like that. All the same, he had a great run. As it is, he had a great match against Baghdatis earlier in the Open. I'd have liked for him to leave on top of his game, but that sadly wasn't to be. There are still a few good players out there... just not in America. All the same, I doubt we'll ever see a player like Agassi for quite a long time, if ever. He's one of a kind, and tennis will definitely miss him.

Esepcially in America... I mean seriously, is there any other player left that makes Americans want to watch tennis? I think not.

A few more fun facts: Agassi is the ONLY player in history to be ranked in the top 10 in three different decades, and he is also the ONLY player to win all four major championships AND the gold medal in the Olympics.
Truly one of a kind!
