Inspired by Killerzzz's 'Number One' thread, I got to wondering who your favourite stars of Asian cinema are.
I figure a poll is pretty pointless as Jackie Chan will walk it, but who else rocks?
I'm fairly new to Asian cinema, only really starting to watch in any detail after Crouching Tiger, Hidden Dragon, which is awesome. My list is thus not gonna be very comprehensive, but these are the people I've really liked:
Jackie Chan. Of course. As both a physical comedian and a martial artist/acrobat, Jackie is just great. His films are all at least watchable, and stuff like Drunken Master rules.
Zhang Ziyi. I'm not sure this girl has ever been in a bad film. She seems really adept at picking great scripts, so I kinda see her appearing in a film as a mark of quality. She always seems to die though, poor girl!
Chow Yun Fat. Just great. Always manages to project a real power and authority when he needs to, but he doesn't have to. Guy has real range and terrific screen presence. First saw him in CTHD, never forgot him since.
Jet Li. Quite possibly the best pure martial artist in Asian cinema right now, I could totally believe he could kick seven bells out of the rest. Possibly at once! ;D
Zhang Yimou. Yeah, he's a director rather than an actor, but I've loved everything I've seen by him so far, so i figured I'd include him anyway ;D

Jet Li. Quite possibly the best pure martial artist in Asian cinema right now, I could totally believe he could kick seven bells out of the rest. Possibly at once! ;D I hate to point this one out to you EK but its the fact that he is a pure martial artist is exactly why he couldn't. Jet Li is quoted as saying after meeting Marc Decascos on the set of Cradle to the Grave, that In a real fight Marc would beat him. Something to do with a combination of Martisl Arts defence and street fighting (hmmm I wonder why I believe that? ) But as for your topic: Ya missed one....Cary-Hiroyuki Tagawa

I used to be so into Martial Arts films but I got kind of tired of them now. Jackie Chan is a great one though! Also even though he is no longer alive Bruce Lee, I used to have the movie The Bruce Lee Story. Shin Koyamada most people might not know him, but he was in Wendy Wu he played the Monk who trained Brenda Song.

Yeah, how could you have forgotten Bruce?! Tony Jaa: A new rising (?) star in the martial arts thang. Not so sure of his acting, but dang his fighting is cool (look past the low budget ). He's famous for Ong-Bak and The Protector. Two movies, basically same story (you have insulted my culture!! >: O , now you must pay!), awsome stunts and fighting. Ken Watanabe: Last Samurai. He was cool. "Tom: What do you want from me??" "Ken: What do you want for yourself?" Haha! I'd like to give Lucy Lu some credit but... well, she does give some notable acting, sometimes... :/ Killerzzz P.S.: Agreed with Jackie Chan and Jet Li. K.

I don't think I've ever heard of him, Kon, which is probably why I missed him... ;D You must have seen him somewhere. Tagawa was Really Evil Japanese Man™ for most of the 80's and 90's. Chances are that if you think of an evil oriental guy, you think of him. Anyway, some of the names listed are cool. Yun Fat is cool, and so is Watanabe. But no one is even close to his majesty the General, the Ronin, His Supreme Awesomeness: Toshiro Mifune.

This guy reminds me of one of the keyplayers in Shogun, anyone remembers that serie? With Richard Chamberlain.
*edit* I knew it, I looked him up and he did play a starring role in Shogun! I was just a little girl when I saw the serie, never saw them again, but his face is one you never forget.
