There's only one poll for guys because there aren't enough up and coming male singers to make it worth it. So they combine. With the exception of James Blunt, the guys are nowhere, these days. It's kinda sad...

Right now the BEST answer is probably Paul Potts, but I wasn't going for that style of singing And the heading should read 'Solo singers' as I'm sure you're all aware If we're going for best male lead singer of a group, though - it's probably Dee Snider of Twisted Sister.

Stever Tyler has a few solo's too, it's mostly with another great artist but solo from his band, how about the duet Misery with P!nk? And Carlos Santana's duet with Steven? But we're not here to fight over who's the best singer huh?

Tyler's a good singer, no question. The BEST - no. Though I have no doubt Venom will disagree vehemently ;D

Won't make you right, though ;D Well, actually it would, because he is! Oh, and just for fun, he IS going to do a solo album after this next Aerosmith album this year.

So I should include Bruce Dickinson and Geddy Lee on the next poll, too? ;D
Although actually... 'Best solo outing by a singer more famous for his/her group' should throw up some interesting singers, now I think about it...
Throw in Mark Knopfler, Gwen Stefani, Freddie Mercury... Hmmm... Might be worth making a poll, there...

Not that Mark Knopfler's that much of a singer...
Oh, and if being in a group disqualifies you, then what's Phil Collins doing on that list? I mean, he's most famous for his days in Genesis, and IIRC that's where he played before he quit.

Collins also has a massive and successful career as a solo artist. The others don't. That's kinda like asking why Robbie Williams is there, Ube. Or Ozzy for that matter.
You ask most people to name Geddy Lee or Bruce Dickinson's solo albums they'll likely say they didn't know either HAD solo albums. Same with Knopfler.
Collins everyone knows as a solo singer as well as his work with Genesis.

The thing with Robin Williams and (arguably) Ozzy is that they're associated mostly with their solo careers. Ozzy hasn't been in a band since he left Black Sabbath in the late 70's. Phil was in Genesis for most of his career, even if he did solo albums during the later Genesis stages. But this was the (comercial) height of Genesis career as well, and I'm quite sure he was their front figure at this stage (being the lead singer).
And shouldn't Peter Gabriel be in the list? He's been a solo artist for way longer than Phil Collins.

Ube - I could have included every single solo singer ever, yes, but it would be a VERY long poll! ;D
Seriously, Peter Gabriel hasn't really been popular since the 80s and more importantly he hasn't been active, either. He doesn't have the kind of timeless songs everyone knows like, say, Don McLean.
I'd also dispute that Robbie was more successful/known on his own than he was with Take That. They were and are a truly phenomenal success, whatever you or I might think of their music.
As for Phil, he left Genesis in the 80s, so he's hardly been solo for only a short time himself.
I have an idea though: if you think you can do a better poll, go for it! Shouldn't be that hard - I was rushed and trying to create a million at once after all... ;D

Correction, Phil was in Genesis until (at least) 1991. Even though he's released solo albums since 1981. And Don McLean has released ONE song I recognize. Robin Williams sold 25 million albums with Take That and 55 millions on his own, and is more famous by himself than Take That was. And AFAIK we're looking for the BEST male solosinger, not the most popular. And me doing a poll? Then I'd had to work! ;D Übereil
