Hello everybody,
From one GM to another, I'm opening the floor to throw around ideas for adventures or campaigns. Perhaps we will inspire each other?
My wife very much enjoys zombie movies, particularly 28 Days Later. We stumbled on the Urban Dead MMORPG a while back and both thoroughly enjoy it. This inspired me to make a zombie RPG for her. It's a single-player campaign useing the d20 Modern rules, and zombies are like the supplied Zombie template with the following additions:
Zombieitis: Disease; Fortitude DC 20; Incubation 1 hour; Initial damage 1d2 Con, 1d2 Int; Secondary damage 1d3 Con, 1d3 Int. When an creature infected with Zombieitis dies, they rise as a zombie 3d4 hours later with full hit points and no ability damage. When a zombie dies, it rises 3d4 hours later with half the maximum hit points it previously had, rounded down, and half the challenge rating. A zombie does not require any appendages to function, though removal of limbs or the head can reduce the zombie's speed, strength, dexterity, wisdom and attacks. The disease can be contracted through blood or saliva. Successful bite attacks or eating from an infected corpse are the most common methods of infection.
Fire Vulnerability: Fire damage reduces the zombie's maximum hit points. The heat chars the flesh and boils away bodily fluids, causing the zombie to ultimately stiffen up and become inanimate.
The campaign starts on a public holiday, when the streets are empty. A zombie escapes from a NecroTech facility, bursting through the front window onto the player. After the player defeats what they believe is a mad-man and leave, a stray dog comes from an alleyway to enjoy the corpse. Later the player receives a letter from NecroTech stating they must come in immediately due to the risk of infection. After being screened and treated for Zombieitis, the player and doctor leave the building to find "rabid" zombie dogs attacking people on the street. This is when NecroTech offer employment to prevent the inevitable spread of Zombieitis.
One of the adventures is incinerating "rabid" dogs at the City Pound, only to find that one of the dogs taken to be destroyed attacked the vet, and another thought to be permanently dead has been sent to a mass grave.
I've always found it difficult designing single-player adventures. The hardest part, particularly in lower levels, is finding a suitable challenge rating. Zombies are notoriously tough and strong and Michelle chose to be a melee-based hero. The City Pound adventure almost killed her and she had to abandon the mission half-way through. I agreed that there was no other option. I'd made the combats too difficult.
It's been a while since I've written an adventure. We're reaching the point where the zombieitis outbreak is about to become very aparrent and public.
What are some of the ideas and plots you've had for your campaigns and adventures?
