I am lighting candles in my window.
On this day in 1945 the Kingdom of Denmark was liberated from the German forces in the Second World War.
This is an emotional event for me. Some of my family helped the resistance in Denmark and I was brought up knowing the significance of the sacrifises made back then.
Words cannot explain how much we owe those brave people who stood up against tyranny and gave their lives so future generations could live in freedom. A freedom we, sadly, take for granted today.
A profilic comic book author once wrote - "There are no words". And there are none - to even try and describe what those heroes did with something as simple as words would be a denigration.
Instead I will remember in silence, in sorrow and in deep pride.
And sitting at my laptop, in the glow of the candles I hope you will join me.
My deepest respect and thanks.

I'm with you Peter. Light one for me too, so I can be there and remember with you. I'll light one here for you and across the miles we will remember together. I think it is a very heart felt and warm tradition which hold alot of meaning in your life. That is why I would like to share it with you. and now to light the one at home.

I'll join my candle in memory of all people from all nations that fought and are fighting an invading, oppressing force. Unfortunately it did not end everywhere in 1945.
Listen to Leonard Cohen's song 'The Partisan' for the occasion.

I'll just second everyone else, here. It's all been said so well already, I have nothing to add but my heartfelt agreement.

And not only should we remember that they fell, but also why. Not just in the 2 great wars, but also in the other wars of our time, the petty wars that make no sense, and the wars that are about ideals. From these we should take the knowledge of what it means to fight, and the things that are worth fighting for.
