I was thinking about getting a monroe piercing. and i looked up videos of poeple getting them done and found this www.youtube.com/watch?v=hcI9487pL2Mit's sort of making me have second thoughts :S when i had my ears done when i was 10, they used like a staple gun, so i figured they would do the same, but other videos of ear piercings show a similar needle going in by hand method. Anyone had unusual piercings? and did they hurt (cliché question i know)? And can anyone pass on some advice about what to expect if I go for another piercing? It's been a while since I got my ears done and it appears times have changed. I'm seriously considering a piercing. My favourites atm seme to be between a monroe peircing and another ear piercing.

Disposable needles are more hygienic than staple guns but be careful, a lot of people get infections if the equipment used isn't sterile.

I've had two piercings, one in my belly button and the other in my nose. I suggest you strongly to go to a decent tattoo parlor, not just some obscure dark place where you don't know anything about their work and medical training. Piercings that go through skin aren't as painful as it may look, the skin is tighly pinched so the feeling leaves that place. As soon as the blood stops running through that small piece of skin by pinching it off a bit, you wont feel a lot. Nose piercings on the other hand hurt a lot, cuz they have to go through cartilage. But still, if it's well done, and you really want a stud you can deal with a few seconds of pain The reason the piercings are done differently as when you were 10 is very simple. With a staple gun they split your skin instead of making a decent hole. Splitting is good for places where you wont find much arteries, cartilage etc. But nowadays the staple gun is completely taken over by the piercing needle. It's much safer, the hole is permanent and the risks are lower. If you use a staple gun to make a piercing in your nose or the hard part of your ear, you might risk more damage because it splits the cartilage instead of making a nice round hole, which is less dangerous.(I think even that staple guns are not allowed anymore?) Ask around to people that have a monroe or a nose stud, where they had it done, and if the place uses sterile needles and desinfecting products. I don't have my piercings anymore now, the belly piercing had to go cuz it didn't heal after nearly a year and I lost the nose piercingcuz of my previous job, where I had to take it off all the time. I lost it in the laundry so I stopped wearing it. But I would get it back asap if I had the money.
Good luck if you're getting a piercing and don't be afraid, it's not soo bad as it looks ;)Just make sure you do it at the right place.

I have the upper ear and had the nose pierced; both in a jewellery shop and with a punch. When it's places like that made of cartilage, it hurts less than where it's just thick skin and flesh/mucous membranes. If you're thinking of getting pierced around the mouth like that, know that the ring/pin might cause damage to your teeth/gum on the mid or long term, so talking about it to your dentist may not be a bad idea before you decide where you want it.
The upper ear was almost painless for me and an hour after I could almost pull on it. The nose was a little more sensitive and it brought tears to the eyes, but it went away fast. I had to take it off due to infection though, having used a bad kind of pin. The hole closed in a matter of a few hours.
Aesthetically, I'm not fond of monroes but then I'm not fond of real moles there either. ;D Multiple earrings, a small diamond on the nose or a pretty ring at the corner of the eyebrow I find can look classy though, and at this point even more conservative places generally accept them around here (a thing to keep in mind if you search for a job).
