We got a lot of "The Best..." threads around here.
So, why not have one for racing games?
Games like those would include, for example -- EA's endless supply of Need For Speed series; SimBin's simulation racer series (such as GTR2, RACE 07, etc etc); Burnout series; etc etc.
So, go to town...

There is one where you intentionally try to wreck, and they have a mode where you try to blow up as much stuff as possible...the name is escaping me atm...
FZERO
Gran Turismo usually puts a good game together.
...I usually don't play a whole lot of racing games...
OOOH Excitebike!!!!

I have to admit, I'm not sure I ever played any racing games at all. Just not my thing.

For me racing games begin and end with the following two games:
Road Rash (preferably the PC version with the rocking soundtrack from Soundgarden and others)
Mario Kart Wii
Burnout is also pretty good too but I haven't had enough time with it to say for sure.

These were fun back in the day...
Mario Kart (SNES) - Great fun
Twisted Metal - Not quite racing, but definitely a competitive motor vehicle game - very destructive
Ridge Racer Revolution - This game came with my PS1, many fond memories
That's about it for me.

I'm actually looking out for a not-too-new good racing game for some time now, But I just cannot find anything that fits my taste - which is mostly because of my not good knowledge about racing games in general. So: Recommendations appreciated ! I prefer colourful, if possible even funny games, by the way. For the PC platform, of course. By the way, I can recommend the game "Championsheep Rally", it's very funny !

I just bought Mario Kart Wii...it is really really fun, brings back (hazy drunken) memories of Mario Kart for N64 when we used to play back in college.

I've liked for arcade-styles racers that I've played on the PC: Midnight Club 2 NFS: Most Wanted NFS: Carbon Burnout: Paradise - The Ultimate Box.
I'm currently playing Burnout: Paradise - The Ultimate Box and the game's just flat-out awesome. If you can deal w/ either Retail versions Securom DRM w/ 5 installs allowed w/ revokes OR The Steam version's ONLY Steam DRM - you're in a bad-ass sandbox racer.
For sim-racers - I do own GTR2 and bought that damn cheap long ago; but I never actually installed it and never even tried it. From what I heard, it's great.
